Help Me Choose A Natural Shampoo
For A First Time User
If you are new to natural shampoo bars making a choice can be a bit overwhelming. If you have read some of our "Help Me Choose Shampoo" pages you will notice one common theme--it is very difficult to make recommendations because each person's hair and scalp conditions are unique.
Your hair may be thick or thin, fine, medium or coarse, straight or
curly, oily or dry, or a combination. For that reason every one of our shampoo bars is made from a different recipe.
Your favorite bar in the summer may differ from your favorite winter
shampoo. Lather, texture, and the feel on your hair and scalp will vary with each
shampoo. You have to experience a few natural shampoo blends to find the
right fit for your hair.
Our best suggestion is to try some different samples. Use them one at a time so that you can really judge how they make your hair and scalp feel. We often tell customers to take notes on what they like or don't like about each
natural shampoo bar. Take note of the ingredients, sometimes you will find something in common
among the bars that your hair likes or those it does not like.
The most common e-mail we receive from new shampoo bar users concerns problems with hair adjustment troubles and goes like this..."I just love the idea of using an all natural shampoo, but my hair feels funny!" Although we have many customers who have no adjustment problems at all, weird or gummy feeling hair it is not an uncommon issue, even after several weeks of use.
There is a lot of information on our Success With Shampoo Bars page. There you will also find a link to My hair is having trouble adjusting to the shampoo bars (my hair feels weird!) that discusses the four main factors that affect your hair's adjustment to shampoo bars.
For first time customers we recommend starting with a few samples of bars that seem to work for most hair types.
The Coconut Milk and
Soapnuts are the first two shampoos we recommend for beginners. They are both are much more 'clean-rinsing' and lighter in nature. The remaining bars on this page also seem to work with many different hair types.
We use only natural ingredients in our shampoo bars. The chemicals in commercial shampoos make for quite a different shampoo experience.
Please do not use a natural shampoo bar once or twice and decide you don't like it. You may have a build-up of chemical residue on your hair from your commercial shampoos and conditioners. Our gentle shampoo bars may not wash away this build up after only one wash. It may take a week or more of using only our natural shampoo bar and a vinegar rinse to really clean the residue out of your hair.
We often receive questions from customers asking for help with specific hair care problems or problems with their hair adjusting to natural shampoo bars. There is an extensive amount of information available in Ida's Corner!
