help me choose: organic salves

If you are my age (59), you remember topical ointments and salves from the corner drugstore. Unfortunately, these ointments were made primarily of petroleum products, like petroleum jelly, and were not truly agents of healing.

Chagrin Valley certified organic salves are made with 100% natural ingredients with no artificial ingredients, no petroleum products, no synthetic preservatives or emulsifiers and no synthetic fragrances.
  Seabuckthorn Tea Tree Salve

Whether you call them balms, salves, or ointments, Chagrin Valley organic salves are combinations of healing herbs, botanicals and therapeutic soothing oils. Some contain pure essential oils for their healing and/or aromatherapeutic properties. When healing herbs are infused into nourishing base oils the benefits reach the deepest layers of the skin.

We use our organic salves externally for minor skin irritations, insect bites, cuts, abrasions, healing scars, muscle and joint pain, stuffiness, chest congestion, stress relief and more.

A common question often asked is, "Which salve is the best?" You will notice from the chart below that although many salves have similar properties, some target very specific problems. Since your skin is unique to you--it is often difficult for us to choose just the right salve for you!

Some of our suggestions based on our experience and customer feedback:

  • BURNS: St. John's Wort Salve

  • ANTISEPTIC OINTMENT: Goldenseal and Myrrh

  • ITCHING: Chickweed

Organic Warming Sore Muscle Salve

When choosing which sore muscle salve to use, Warming Cayenne or Cooling Menthol, it is simply trial and error. The best question to ask yourself is . . . what helps alleviate your pain better, Heat or Cold.

The Warming Salve contains a synergist blend of herbal infused oils and essential oils that I personally find very helpful with nerve pain and sore muscle pain.  Although I find that the cooling menthol salve provides more relief for my arthritic joint pain, I like the Warming Salve better for the arthritis in my thumb joints.

We have friends and family with restless leg syndrome who massage these salves into their calves or soles of their feet. While some like the warmth and some the cool, it seems that the warming salve works better for the calves and the Cooling Salve works better on the feet.

The choice is very much based on personal preference,  but I just wanted to share what we have discovered.

Salves and ointments should not be used on open or weeping skin with Poison Ivy or Poison Oak.
The irritating oil (urushiol) in Poison Ivy and Poison Oak can be spread by oil based products.
Once the area has dried, salves can be used to aid healing or relieve itching.
