Organic Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Bright, Clean, and Naturally Refreshing

Lemon Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus citriodora, oil is steam distilled from the leaves and twigs of the lemon-scented Eucalyptus citriodora tree. Although originally from Australia, the trees grow in Guatemala, Colombia, Egypt, South Africa, India, and China.

Long valued in both Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine, this oil is known for its uniquely bright, lemony aroma—despite containing no citrus compounds. It belongs to a special family of “lemon-scented” botanicals like litsea cubeba, melissa, and lemon verbena, prized for their soft, refreshing, non-citrus top notes.

Skin Benefits

Lemon eucalyptus oil offers strong purifying properties, making it a useful addition to soaps designed for outdoor living.

Traditionally used to help alleviate fungal issues such as athlete’s foot, this oil also supports general skin comfort and cleanliness—especially helpful after time spent camping, hiking, or gardening.

As a properly diluted massage oil, lemon eucalyptus has a gently warming, soothing effect that can ease muscle and joint discomfort. It has long been used to help relax tension and provide comfort after physical activity.

Lemon eucalyptus essential oil, when combined with other oils, offers a naturally refreshing, plant-based way to help discourage mosquitoes. Unlike synthetic repellents, its aroma fades more quickly—so it’s best used in products like outdoor soaps where frequent reapplication isn’t needed.

Aromatherapy Properties

The aroma of lemon eucalyptus is fresh, crisp, and lightly sweet—energizing yet also subtly calming. Its cooling, lemony fragrance helps uplift the mood, refresh the senses, and clear mental fatigue.

Diffused, it acts as a natural air freshener, brightening indoor spaces with its outdoorsy, clean scent.

Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil vs. Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus

They Are Not the Same

Many companies selling “natural” insect repellents claim to use lemon eucalyptus oil, which the CDC recommends as an alternative to DEET.

Unfortunately, the CDC recommendation applies only to Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE) — not to Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil.

While both are often found in mosquito repellents, they differ in efficacy and chemical composition. Most companies are not trying to deceive you — they simply don’t realize there is an important distinction.

Because these names sound nearly identical, misunderstandings are extremely common. Here’s what you need to know:

Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil
  • Made by steam distilling the leaves and twigs of the Lemon Eucalyptus tree.
  • Contains citronellal as its main component, with only small, natural trace amounts of PMD (p-menthane-3,8-diol), the compound responsible for strong, long-lasting insect repellent effects.
  • The repellent properties are mainly due to all of its components, of which citronella is only one.
  • It has some mosquito-repelling properties, but they are short-lived and not strong enough for high-risk areas of insect-borne disease.
  • This essential oil is used in natural soaps and aromatherapy products, but the CDC does NOT recommend it as a replacement for DEET
Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE)
  • NOT an essential oil
  • It is a specially processed extract of the essential oil
  • It is steam-distilled and then further processed to concentrate the active repellent compound, PMD, from the steam-distilled oil.
  • PMD is the compound responsible for strong, long-lasting insect repellent effects.
  • OLE (or synthetic PMD) is the only plant-based active ingredient the CDC recommends as a DEET alternative.
  • Safety guidelines note that OLE should not be used on children under 3 years old.
Bottom Line

Even though the names sound almost identical, Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil is NOT Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE).

Caution: If a company claims CDC-level repellent effectiveness, I would ask them to clarify which one they are actually using—because only OLE meets the CDC standard.
