Moisturizing Organic Carrier Oils
Unrefined Golden Jojoba Oil is considered nature's most effective natural moisturizer since its structure closely resembles that of the body’s own natural skin oils. Non-greasy Jojoba penetrates the skin easily and with its highly emollient properties, is a favorite choice for all skin types including mature, aging, and sensitive skin.
Sunflower Seed Oil, rich in linoleic acid, is one of the most moisturizing vegetable oils. It has emollient properties that not only help hydrate skin but also help the skin retain its own natural moisture. Sunflower oil has anti-inflammatory properties that help soothe and heal skin irritated skin conditions, reduce redness, and promote smoother skin. This light oil is non-comedogenic, is easily absorbed and can be used on all types of skin.

How to Use
Shake gently then freely roll over pulse or pressure points such as temples, under the nose, behind ears, back of the neck, insides of wrists, bottoms of feet, or anywhere that feels good. Re-apply as desired.

Aromatherapy is the inhaled or topical use of aromatic plant essences like essential oils to support wellbeing and help maintain the balance of the mind, body, and spirit. Aromatherapy has been used by ancient cultures for thousands of years to promote psychological and physical wellbeing.
There are a variety of ways to add a bit of aromatherapy into your life using essential oils. Each essential oil offers a range of unique aromatherapeutic properties, uses, and effects. Different oils can also be combined to create a synergistic blend with its own unique benefits.
So how and why does the aroma of essential oils affect our mood? The way in which our sense of smell is wired to our brain is quite unique among our senses. The part of your brain that processes and interprets scents also deals with memory and emotions. This relationship may help explain why smells often trigger specific memories or emotions.
When we inhale through our nose, the scent molecules in essential oils travel across millions of tiny olfactory neurons that sit on the roof of the nasal cavity.
Once triggered, the olfactory neurons send messages to the olfactory bulbs, two lobes at the base of the brain. But olfactory messages do not stop there. They also trigger brain regions like the limbic system which plays an important role in emotion, mood, stress levels, and behavior as well as heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, and memory.
Essential oils can lift your mood and make you feel fabulous with a simple whiff of their natural aroma. Each oil has a different chemical make-up and therefore a different effect. For example:
- some have energizing, uplifting, and revitalizing properties
- some help ease stress, anxiety, and depression
- some promote relaxing, calming, and soothing feelings
- some help improve sleep

There is some research and a lot of anecdotal evidence that has shown the positive benefits of aromatherapy, such as relief from anxiety, improved sleep, and improved quality of life. The information concerning safe dilution for essential oils is often quite ambiguous and often contradictory.
Due to their high concentration, the general consensus among certified aromatherapists is that you should not apply undiluted essential oils onto the skin except under the supervision of a professional.
According to Robert Tisserand, a recognized authority in aromatherapy, “Do not apply undiluted essential oils to your skin. It’s that simple. The most common adverse reaction, experienced by hundreds, possibly thousands of people every year, is a skin reaction, and the most common cause is using an undiluted essential oil..”
The book Essential Oil Safety Tisserand co-authored with Rodney Young has become an industry standard for safety guidelines.
When deciding the proper dilution for a single essential oil, an essential oil blend, or any product containing essential oils there are a few main factors that need to be considered.
- Which essential oil or oils are being used? Each oil has a different maximum percentage that can be used in skincare products before you risk skin irritation. This is called the maximum recommended dilution rate.
- How is the final product being used? For example, does the product remain on the skin after application, such as a body cream; is it readily washed off like soap; or is it generally applied to small localized areas like perfume?
- Where is the final product being used? For example, is the product being used on the face, the lips, the whole body, or a small localized area?
When calculating dilution rates, all essential oils must be counted together. For example, if the total dilution should be 2%, that means 2% total of all the essential oils used in that product, not 2% of each oil.
According to the Tisserand Institute, the following dilution rates are suggested based on usage.
- Facial cosmetics: 0.2-1.5%
- Body massage: 1.5-3%
- Bath & body products: 1-4%
- Specific problems: 4-10%
Although there is some wiggle room since the numbers vary based on the factors mentioned above, for most body care formulations it is recommended that essential oils make up no more than 2% of your total end product weight.
At Chagrin Valley, our body care products made with essential oils that remain on the skin have a dilution rate of less than 2%. The actual rate for each product depends on the oils used and the usage. Although people enjoy the scents in skincare products, their main function tends to be moisturizing not aromatherapy.
Except for our Whipped Squalane Face & Eye Mousse which contains organic lavender at a dilution rate of less than 0.05%, our facial moisturizers do not contain essential oils. For our scrubs, which are considered "wash-off" products, the dilution is still less than 1.0%.
Aromatherapy Roll-Ons are a bit different. They are generally applied sparingly to small localized areas and their function IS aromatherapy. In order to experience the benefits of these aromatic products, we need to use a higher proportion of essential oils. There seems to be a general consensus that for spot use of an aromatherapy roll-on, a dilution of up to 5% is safe for adults and still allows for gentle aromatherapy.
We have been making essential oil blends for our own personal use for about 4 years and now we have decided to share some of them with you! After almost a year of testing variations of each Aromatherapy formulation that we sell on friends, family, and customers with a variety of skin types and sensitivities we chose a dilution of 4.5%. Although our sample was small, our test subjects enjoyed the strength of the aromas and experienced no skin irritations or sensitivities.
What Are Pure Essential Oils?
Have you ever enjoyed the scent of a fragrant flower or herb? The fragrance comes from potent, aromatic compounds called essential oils.
These natural compounds are found in the flowers, stems, seeds, bark, roots, fruits, and other parts of plants. It often requires several pounds of a plant to produce a single bottle of essential oil.
Essential oils not only give plants their unique scents but also help lure plant pollinators and protect plants from insects and other predators.
The chemical composition of essential oils may provide valuable psychological and physical aromatherapeutic benefits for some people.
It is important to note that to be a true essential oil, the oil must be isolated from the plant material by physical means only.
Essential oils are NEVER extracted using solvents.
Although synthetic fragrances or "nature identical" oils are available at a much lower cost, only natural plant essential oils will provide the botanical benefits.
Be careful that the essential oil-containing products you purchase for topical use are mixed with the correct medium.
Essential oils are soluble (dissolve) in alcohol and carrier oils. However, they are insoluble (do not dissolve) in water or water-based liquids like hydrosols, milk, aloe, or even witch hazel (which contains a small amount of alcohol).
When mixed with a water-based ingredient the molecules of the essential oil will float in tiny droplets on the surface (think of oil droplets on the surface of water). Those droplets can behave like undiluted essential oils on your skin and cause irritation.
