Devil's Claw, Harpagophytum procumbens, has been a popular anti-inflammatory and arthritis treatment since it was first discovered in South Africa by European colonists in the 18th century. It is a very bitter herb and derives its scary-sounding name from the little spiny hooks that cover its fruit.
The roots, which are actually tubers, have been used medicinally for centuries to help treat pain, fever, and even malaria.
Devil’s claw is also used topically in ointments or balms to heal sores, boils, and irritated or inflamed skin problems. A salve containing Devil's claw can also help ease muscular and joint inflammation and pain like arthritis and gout.
