The Inside Scoop on Natural Shampoo Bars: Nature-Driven Hair Care Explained
I write a lot of blogs about natural shampoo bars, but we get a lot of questions and we love answering them. After all, the switch from liquid shampoo to a bar can feel like a big leap. But once you make the switch, most people never go back.
Our bars are more than just shampoo without the bottle. They are a return to simple, effective, earth-conscious hair care made with real ingredients you can trust.
What Is A Natural Shampoo Bar?
Natural shampoo bars, a favorite early discovery of mine, are conditioning solid shampoos designed to gently cleanse and nourish hair using the power of plants. They offer an effective, planet-friendly alternative to conventional liquid shampoos.
As more people prioritize their health and the health of our planet, they are moving away from hair products loaded with synthetic chemicals, sulfates, detergents, artificial colors, and synthetic fragrances.
Instead, they are turning toward cleaner, more eco-friendly, sustainable options.
Our natural shampoo bars create a rich, creamy lather by blending organic plant oils and butters, botanicals, herbal infusions, and pure essential oils.
Each bar is carefully crafted to harness the nourishing properties of plants and promote healthier hair from root to tip.
Perfect for anyone seeking a natural, eco-conscious, and travel-friendly hair care option, our shampoo bars support healthy, vibrant hair and offer a refreshing, sustainable alternative to conventional detergent-based shampoos.

A Bit of Shampoo History
As someone who enjoys learning about the origin of words, I found the history of shampooing interesting. Today, shampooing is an integral part of our hygiene routine, but where did this practice originate?
According to etymonline, the online etymology dictionary, the word "shampoo" dates back to 1762 and is derived from the Hindi term "chāmpo," meaning to massage, press, knead, or soothe.
In colonial India, early traders indulged in a luxurious hair and body cleansing treatment that incorporated massage. Upon returning to Europe, they introduced this novel practice, dubbed "shampoo."
Interestingly, the term "shampoo" did not assume its modern meaning, referring specifically to hair washing, until the late 1800s. Before that, shampooing referred to therapeutic massaging of not only the head but of the entire body, promoting relaxation and well-being.
Although solid soap shampoos may appear to be a modern invention, they have a rich history. In fact, they predate liquid detergent shampoos, which gained popularity in the 1940s.
Before World War II, solid soap shampoos were the standard. However, the introduction of synthetic detergents and the discovery of the surfactant sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) transformed the hair care industry. As a result, liquid shampoos in plastic containers gained popularity, eventually becoming a staple in nearly every family bathroom.
In the book Hints on Health, published in 1852, William Edward Coale writes, "To cleanse the hair, there is nothing better than soap and water . . . the soap, of course, should be mild, and well and plentifully rubbed in, and afterward thoroughly removed with an abundance of water.”
The ad, taken from Duke University Libraries Digital Collection, is a 1920 advertisement for "shampoo" soap.
If you are not used to solid shampoo bars, the concept may sound a bit strange, but they are WONDERFUL!
Why I Began Making Shampoo Bars?
Over twenty years ago, a startling realization struck me while reading the label on my bottle of "natural" shampoo. Here I was, a passionate creator of organic soap, lip balm, and body cream, yet the shampoo I used was filled with synthetic ingredients. The disconnect was quite upsetting.
I began searching for a better option, but true natural shampoo bars were rare. So began my journey of research, trial and error, and discovery.
I Made Natural Shampoo Bars For Me and You!
Just read the ingredient label on a typical bottle of liquid shampoo, and the answer becomes clear.
Liquid shampoos are a cocktail of synthetic preservatives, detergents, foaming agents, sulfates, artificial fragrances, and dyes.
These synthetic chemicals have no place on my hair or yours.
Some of these chemicals may irritate the scalp and strip your hair of its natural protective oils, leaving it dry, brittle, and more prone to damage.
Why do I keep emphasizing the "Natural" when I say "Natural Shampoo Bar"? Because not all shampoo bars are the same.
Many of the newer shampoo bars are made with synthetic detergents. These syndet (synthetic detergent) bars are essentially bottled liquid shampoo without the water or the plastic packaging. While they may help reduce plastic waste, they are not natural shampoo bars. (More about this later)
I Made Natural Shampoo Bars For Mother Earth
No Plastic
Shampoo bars help decrease our environmental impact by eliminating plastic bottles. The billions upon billions of pieces of plastic waste piling up on land and choking our oceans, lakes, and rivers are having devastating consequences for plants, wildlife, ecosystems, and human health.
According to a 2022 report by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), "the world is producing twice as much plastic waste as two decades ago, with the bulk of it ending up in landfill, incinerated or leaking into the environment, and only 9% successfully recycled."
The United States alone generates about 487 pounds (221 kg) of plastic waste per person each year. Yet according to Greenpeace, only around 5% of that plastic is actually recycled.

Beyond eliminating plastic, our natural shampoo bars offer additional environmental benefits:
No Synthetic Ingredients
Many synthetic ingredients found in detergent-based shampoos, such as silicones, parabens, sulfates, and artificial fragrances, do not break down easily.
Instead, they wash down our drains, entering our septic systems or wastewater treatment plants, and in some cases, making their way into lakes, streams, rivers, and even public water supplies.
Over time, these forever chemicals can accumulate in our ecosystems, impacting wildlife and water quality. Research has increasingly shown that personal care products contribute significantly to this pollution.
A 2024 study, "Harmful Effects of Personal Care Products on Ecosystems," reveals that many products, including shampoo, contain chemical pollutants that "have a harmful impact on the environment, contaminate water bodies, harm aquatic life, contribute to coral reef damage, and persist in the environment."
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has detected chemicals from personal care products in nearly every water supply they have tested.
Ironically, a product we use to keep our hair clean is doing quite the opposite for our environment.
Organic Farming Matters
Chagrin Valley shampoos are made with organic ingredients. Choosing organic means supporting organic farming, a system that helps protect the environment by avoiding toxic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.
Organic farming improves the quality of our environment by protecting our land and groundwater from contamination while promoting the use of sustainable resources and the conservation of soil and water.

A Smaller Carbon Footprint
Concentrated, solid shampoo bars have a significantly lower carbon footprint than bottled shampoos thanks to their compact size, minimal packaging, and lighter weight. Most liquid shampoos are made up of about 80% water, making them heavier to transport, which requires more fuel and results in higher carbon emissions.
Our natural shampoo bars offer a more sustainable alternative to traditional liquid shampoos, significantly reducing carbon footprint, packaging waste, and environmental impact.
At Chagrin Valley, we believe in defending the delicate balance of our ecosystems, oceans, wildlife, and water supplies. Conventional shampoos and personal care products, filled with synthetic chemicals, threaten that balance.
A natural shampoo bar is more than an awesome hair care product. It is a simple, powerful way to care for yourself and our Earth.
Are Your Shampoo Bars "Real" Shampoo?
We are often asked this question. But what does "real shampoo" even mean?
The answer comes down to surfactants, the cleansing agents at the heart of every product that lathers and foams. Surfactants break up oily dirt, allowing it to be rinsed away with water. That lovely lather? It is all thanks to surfactants.
Soap is a natural surfactant. Long before synthetic detergents were invented, all shampoos were essentially soap bars.
Then came the rise of synthetic detergents, or “syndets", lab-made surfactants that were cheap to produce, easy to customize, and gave manufacturers complete control over texture, fragrance, and shelf life. These detergents became the new norm in commercial shampoos.
And somehow, over time, that became “real” shampoo.
My goodness, when did we start calling synthetic detergent the “real” thing?
If being a “real shampoo” implies a shampoo made with synthetic surfactants… then no, our bars are NOT that. And proudly so.
Chagrin Valley shampoo bars are made the traditional way, with organic plant oils, botanical infusions, and essential oils. They are soap-based, but specially formulated for gentle, effective hair cleansing. They are made for people who care about what goes on their bodies and what goes down their drains.
They may not fit the modern marketing definition of shampoo, but they fit the definition of what real, healthy hair care should be.

What's The Difference Between Soap Bars And Shampoo Bars?
While soap and natural shampoo bars share a similar manufacturing process, a well-formulated shampoo bar is not your typical soap bar.
Shampoo bars are thoughtfully crafted with a different balance of ingredients, designed specifically to support scalp health and promote soft, shiny, well-conditioned hair. It’s not just about cleansing.
Shampoo bar "recipes" are carefully tweaked:
- To use different proportions of conditioning plant oils and butters that support hair and scalp health
- To include hair-loving botanicals, like nettles and horsetail, along with herb-infused oils and essential oils traditionally used to strengthen and soothe
- To harness the nourishing power of plants, not synthetic additives, to promote healthier, more vibrant hair
Each of our shampoo bars is unique, with its own blend of organic plant oils, butters, essential oils, and herb-infused oils. We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all formula because no two heads of hair are exactly the same.

Why Natural Shampoo Bars Deserve a Place in Your Hair Care Routine
Making the switch to natural shampoo bars can transform your hair care routine.
Many people notice increased volume, reduced dandruff, less shedding, shinier hair, and less frizz. Those with curls often see more definition, better control, and improved manageability
Natural shampoo bars can be used on all hair types, whether dry, oily, or combination, and work beautifully on all hair lengths, from short to long. These benefits come from the gentle, natural ingredients that nourish and moisturize the hair and scalp.
Natural Shampoo Bars Are Truly, Honestly Natural
Our shampoo bars are made with certified organic and natural ingredients, no synthetic shortcuts or marketing spin.
- They are sulfate-free and contain no foam boosters or detergent surfactants like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium coco sulfate (SCS), sodium cocoyl isethionate, or sodium methyl cocoyl taurate.
- They contain no artificial fragrance, color, preservatives, alcohol, formaldehyde, DEA, propylene glycol, or any of the other synthetic hair care additives.
We don’t rely on “derived from nature” language.
Our ingredients are nature--organic plant oils, butters, essential oils, and botanical infusions.
What’s the Difference Between Natural and “Plant-Derived” Ingredients?
There is a big difference—and it matters.
Buzzwords like “naturally derived,” “naturally sourced,” “plant-derived,” and “derived from nature” can be misleading. With no legal definitions to back them up, these terms are often used to create a false impression of a product’s natural integrity or purity.
Let’s say an ingredient like sodium coco sulfate (SCS), sodium cocoyl isethionate, or sodium methyl cocoyl taurate is followed by the words “a gentle cleanser derived from coconuts."
While these phrases suggest a connection to nature, all they mean is that the ingredient started out as a plant called a coconut. They say nothing about how that coconut plant was processed, how much it was chemically modified, or what additives were introduced along the way.
In truth, many so-called “plant-derived” ingredients undergo such a significant transformation that they bear little resemblance to their original plant.
To be clear, I am not saying these ingredients are harmful or ineffective. Many are considered safe and mild by current standards.
But they are still synthetic detergents and do not belong in a truly "natural" shampoo bar. If you are looking for a genuinely natural shampoo bar, one that aligns with your values and supports your desire for ingredient transparency, it is important to look beyond the buzzwords.
Read ingredient lists carefully, and choose brands that prioritize minimal processing and truly natural, nutrient-rich ingredients.
At Chagrin Valley, we believe in keeping things as close to nature as possible. We use organic ingredients like cold-pressed plant oils and butters, pure essential oils, dried herbs, and botanicals—wholesome ingredients chosen for their integrity, not their marketing appeal.

How Do I Use a Shampoo Bar?
Mastering the right shampoo technique is crucial to unlocking the full potential of a shampoo bar.
The primary goal of shampooing is to remove dirt and excess oils from the scalp. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to apply shampoo from roots to tips. Instead, focus on massaging the shampoo into your scalp. As you rinse the lather through your hair with your fingers, the shampoo will effectively clean the length of your hair.

Not All Shampoo Bars Are Natural
Technological advancements have led to numerous remarkable discoveries. Unfortunately, in the personal care industry, they often translate into new synthetic ingredients. When consumers pushed back against harsh sulfates like SLS, manufacturers responded, not by returning to nature, but by swapping in new synthetic detergents.
This shift gave rise to the detergent-based, syndet shampoo bar. These bars were designed to reduce plastic waste while mimicking the feel and performance of liquid shampoos. They use synthetic surfactants that rinse cleaner and feel more like conventional shampoo. In other words, they are bottled shampoo minus the water and plastic.
Two Types of Shampoo Bars
As shampoo bars grow in popularity, so do the marketing tactics used to sell them. Many consumers are surprised to learn that there are two distinct types of shampoo bars: soap-based bars and detergent-based syndet bars. Although they serve the same purpose, these two shampoo bar types have fundamentally different compositions and properties.
- Soap-based shampoo bars, like ours, are made from natural oils, butters, and herbs through the traditional soapmaking process.
- Syndet bars are made with synthetic detergents and often marketed as “soap-free.”
Syndet shampoo bars may contain a few plant-derived ingredients, but their cleansing agents are created in labs.
Companies that make them argue that modern synthetic surfactants are milder and safer than the old-school sulfates.
Maybe they are. But consider this: SLS was used for decades before research raised concerns. How long will it take to fully understand the long-term effects of these “milder” synthetics?
As a maker of Natural Shampoo Bars, I will admit my bias against synthetic detergents. But, to be clear, my goal is not to demonize syndet shampoo bars. I understand the appeal: no plastic, no bottle, and a familiar feel.
In fact, if your hair and scalp have adapted to the ingredients in a liquid detergent shampoo, you may have little or no adjustment period when switching to a solid detergent-based shampoo bar. This is the key argument for using a syndet bar made by the companies that make them.
Choosing the right shampoo bar for your hair care needs is a personal decision. Ask yourself: Why do you want to switch to a shampoo bar?
If reducing plastic waste is your top priority, then any plastic-free shampoo bar will help you achieve this eco-friendly goal.
But if you are looking for something more, something truly natural, it is worth understanding the difference. "Soap-free" syndet shampoo bars, despite containing some natural ingredients, rely on synthetic detergents and are not natural shampoos.
As you research your options, remember that each company's perspective is shaped by the type of products it sells. We are no exception.
At Chagrin Valley, we trust in the value of simple, natural ingredients, with no need for lab-created substitutes or synthetic shortcuts. That commitment is at the heart of our natural shampoo bars, just as it is at the heart of every product we make.
And while we are proud of the role our natural shampoo bars play in reducing waste, we are just as proud of how they care for your scalp, your hair, and the environment, with honesty, gentleness, and respect.
Natural Shampoo Bars: The Choice Is Simple, The Impact Is Profound
Natural shampoo bars may have taken a backseat during the rise of liquid detergent shampoos in the 20th century, but today, they are back, and with good reason. More and more people are questioning the ingredients in their personal care products, looking for alternatives that are not only better for their hair but also kinder to their bodies and the planet.
At Chagrin Valley, we are proud to be part of this shift. And we are proud to support people like you, curious, thoughtful, and ready to make choices that matter.
