Clary Sage Essential Oil
Calming Support for Skin & Spirit
Clary Sage, Salvia sclarea, has a beautiful, earthy, herbaceous aroma with a soft floral note. The essential oil is steam distilled from the flowering tops and leaves of Salvia sclarea, a Mediterranean plant in the mint family. It is closely related to Salvia officinalis—the culinary garden sage many of us know well.
Cultivated since the Middle Ages for its medicinal, aromatic, and spiritual uses, clary sage carries a long tradition of healing. Its botanical name comes from the Latin salvare, meaning “to heal.”
When used topically, the natural soothing qualities of clary sage help calm inflammation, ease irritation, and support the healing of rashes.
Its gentle astringent properties help balance natural oil production, making it useful for both oily and dry skin. With antibacterial benefits, clary sage can also support clearer, healthier-looking complexions, especially for those prone to acne.
Often called the “Woman’s Oil,” clary sage has long been valued for its comforting effect during hormonal shifts. Anecdotal evidence—and some preliminary research—suggests that diluted clary sage applied to the bottoms of the feet may help reduce hot flashes. When properly diluted and massaged onto the abdomen, it may also help ease monthly cramps and tension.
Aromatherapy Properties: Clary sage’s soft, grounding aroma has a mild sedative effect that calms the mind and encourages emotional balance.
It promotes feelings of relaxation, clarity, and contentment while easing anxiety, stress, irritability, and low mood. Its uplifting qualities help improve focus and relieve mental fatigue. The fresh, soothing scent creates a peaceful environment that helps support deeper rest and more restorative sleep.
Clary sage is especially valued for its ability to comfort stress, reduce restlessness, and encourage emotional resilience. For many women, it is a favorite oil for supporting mood balance and relaxation throughout hormonal cycles.
