Geranium Essential Oil
Balancing, Calming, and Naturally Radiant
Geranium essential oil, Pelargonium graveolens, and its close relative Rose Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens var. Roseum) share nearly identical compositions and benefits.
Both oils are steam distilled from the leaves and flowers of the plant and are prized for their beautifully soft floral scent—Rose Geranium being slightly more rose-like. Often referred to as the “poor man’s rose,” geranium offers many of the same valued skin-supportive qualities at a more accessible cost.
Geranium essential oil is suitable for all skin types due to its gentle, balancing nature. It helps regulate the skin’s natural oil production, making it beneficial for both oily and dry complexions.
Its mild astringent and antibacterial properties help minimize the appearance of enlarged pores, ease acne breakouts, calm inflammation, and soothe irritated or reactive skin conditions such as eczema. By supporting circulation and promoting skin renewal, geranium can help brighten dull areas and encourage a more even, radiant complexion.
The oil’s natural toning and rejuvenating qualities make it a popular ingredient in facial serums, moisturizers, and toners. It also supports faster fading of scars and blemishes and helps maintain a healthy balance between dry and oily areas of the skin.
In hair care, because geranium has the same balancing effect on the scalp, it is a useful addition to hair care blends, helping refresh the scalp, ease oiliness, and support healthier-looking hair.
Aromatherapy Properties: Geranium essential oil has a sweet, floral aroma that is both calming and uplifting. It helps ease stress, anxiety, irritability, and mood swings while promoting relaxation, emotional stability, and a sense of well-being. Many find its scent soothing to the nervous system yet gently energizing, making it a favorite for grounding and restoring emotional balance.
Its comforting fragrance uplifts the spirit, encourages positivity, and supports deeper, more peaceful rest—perfect for pillow mists or unwinding at the end of the day. Geranium is also a beautiful companion for yoga, meditation, or any quiet moment, helping enhance clarity, centeredness, and inner peace.
Side note: The garden-center “geraniums” with bright red or pink blooms (Pelargonium x hortorum) are not the same plants used to make essential oil. Their scent is faint, and they are not suitable for distillation.
