Geranium essential oil, Pelargonium graveolens, and Rose Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens var. Roseum) have almost identical compositions and properties, making them equally beneficial. Rose geranium essential oil has a more floral scent, which is similar to that of roses. Geranium oil is often compared to rose essential oil because they share almost the same therapeutic traits. In fact, geranium is considered the "poor man's rose." Geranium oil is steam distilled from the leaves and flowers.

A side note: “Geranium” is the common name of many members of the genus Pelargonium. The bedding Geraniums found in garden centers with large red, pink, or flowers are not the same. These geraniums, known as Pelargonium x hortum, are not used to make essential oil since they have a very faint scent.
