What Is Dead Sea Salt?

Dead Sea salt is harvested from the Dead Sea, a landlocked salt lake located more than 1,200 feet below sea level. With no natural outlet, water leaves the Dead Sea almost entirely through evaporation, leaving behind an exceptionally concentrated reservoir of salts and minerals.

Unlike ordinary sea salt, which is primarily sodium chloride, Dead Sea salt contains significantly less sodium and a much higher proportion of minerals such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, and bromides. Its mineral concentration is roughly 33%, compared to about 3% in most oceans.

This unique composition is what sets Dead Sea salt apart.

Why We Use Dead Sea Salt in Skin Care

Dead Sea salt is valued for its distinct mineral profile and skin-soothing properties, making it especially well-suited for products designed to comfort, cleanse, and rebalance the skin.

When dissolved in water or incorporated into skin care products, Dead Sea salt delivers minerals that help support hydration, calm visible irritation, and improve overall skin feel. Its naturally coarse texture also makes it useful for gentle physical exfoliation, helping remove dull surface skin cells and unclog pores.

Because it contains far less sodium chloride than typical sea salt, Dead Sea salt tends to feel less drying and more conditioning on the skin.

Bathing with Dead Sea Salt

Dead Sea salt has traditionally been used in soaking baths, where warm water allows its unique mineral composition to dissolve and interact with the skin. A Dead Sea salt bath creates a mineral-rich soak that helps cleanse the skin, soften rough areas, and promote a deeply relaxed, refreshed feeling throughout the body.

As the salt dissolves, minerals such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium are distributed across the skin’s surface. Magnesium, in particular, is associated with muscle relaxation and a calming effect on the body, helping ease everyday tension and encourage a sense of overall well-being. While warm water alone is relaxing, the addition of Dead Sea salt enhances the experience—making the bath feel more soothing, restorative, and grounding.

How Dead Sea Salt Supports the Skin

  • Mineral Support: Magnesium, calcium, and potassium are commonly used in skin care for their ability to help support hydration, barrier comfort, and overall skin balance.
  • Soothing & Comforting: The mineral content, particularly magnesium, helps calm the look of redness and irritation, making Dead Sea salt popular in products designed for sensitive or stressed skin.
  • Exfoliation & Pore Cleansing: Salt crystals provide physical exfoliation, while dissolved minerals help draw surface debris and excess oil away from pores.
  • Hydration Support: Unlike highly refined salt, Dead Sea salt helps the skin retain moisture rather than stripping it away.

Skin Types

Dead Sea salt is generally well tolerated by many skin types, particularly when used in rinse-off products such as baths, soaks, scrubs, and soaps. Best suited for:

  • Normal to oily skin
  • Combination skin
  • Skin that feels congested, dull, or stressed

Those with very sensitive or compromised skin may prefer lower concentrations or less frequent use, as with any mineral salt.

Buyer Beware

Not all Dead Sea salt is the same. Lower-quality versions are often washed or refined, a process that strips away much of the naturally occurring trace minerals that make Dead Sea salt unique. Some commercial salts may also contain anti-caking agents or other additives.

We source mineral-rich Dead Sea salt that is minimally processed to preserve its natural mineral balance. Our Dead Sea Salt is Organic Compliant!
