Cocoa Powder
Natural Color & Gentle Exfoliation
Cocoa Powder comes from cocoa beans—the seeds of the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao), grown in equatorial regions around the world. When cocoa beans are pressed to remove most of the cocoa butter, the remaining solids are dried and finely ground into cocoa powder. Because some cocoa butter remains, each particle is still lightly coated, giving cocoa powder its rich feel and aroma.
Cocoa powder is the most concentrated expression of cocoa itself, carrying much of chocolate’s natural character in a more functional form.
Why We Use Cocoa Powder
Cocoa powder is a versatile ingredient that brings natural color, gentle exfoliation, and skin-conditioning benefits to a wide range of products. We use cocoa powder:
- To naturally deepen the color in dark hair dry shampoos
- To add earthy color and character to natural soaps and shampoo bars
- In face masks and lip balm, where its fine texture and skin-friendly properties shine
- In our Mocha Java Body Sugar Scrub, where it contributes both exfoliation and skin feel
Cocoa powder earns its place not just for how it looks—but for how it performs.
What Cocoa Powder Adds to Skin Care
Cocoa powder is naturally rich in plant compounds and minerals that make it well suited for topical use.
- Gentle Exfoliation: Finely ground cocoa powder provides mild physical exfoliation, helping remove dull surface skin cells and promote smoother-looking skin.
- Antioxidant Content: Cocoa powder contains flavonoids, plant compounds often appreciated in skin care for helping protect against everyday environmental stressors.
- Naturally Occurring Caffeine & Theobromine: These compounds are commonly used in body care for their temporarily toning and smoothing effects and to help reduce the look of puffiness.
- Mineral Content: Cocoa powder contains naturally occurring minerals such as calcium, potassium, and zinc, which contribute to skin-conditioning benefits.
Because it is gentle and non-greasy, cocoa powder is often used in masks and exfoliating products designed for normal to oily or acne-prone skin.
Cocoa Powder in Hair & Scalp Care
In hair care, cocoa powder is valued primarily for its natural color and lightweight feel. In dry shampoos it helps absorb surface oil while blending seamlessly into darker hair tones. When used thoughtfully, it refreshes the scalp and hair without leaving a heavy or chalky residue.

Naturally effective and versatile, cocoa powder brings color, gentle exfoliation, and real performance to products designed to work with your skin—not against it.
