Henna Leaf
A Desert Plant with a Soft Spot for Hair
Henna, Lawsonia inermis, is a desert flowering plant whose leaves have been used since ancient times as a natural dye. The leaves are naturally dried, crushed, and sifted into a fine green powder. Henna’s red pigment, called lawsone, is a naturally occurring tannin found in the leaves.
Fresh henna leaves appear green because chlorophyll dominates their color, masking the red pigment naturally present in the leaf. A helpful way to think about this is a maple tree—its leaves contain vibrant reds and golds that remain hidden until the green chlorophyll fades in autumn.
The coloring properties of henna come from the way lawsone interacts with keratin, the structural protein that makes up hair. Henna pigments bind to the outer layer of the hair shaft, forming a permanent coating along the cuticle. Unlike synthetic hair dyes, henna does not chemically alter the internal structure of the hair.
While henna is best known for its coloring ability, it is also valued for the way it conditions and strengthens hair. By coating the hair shaft, henna helps seal in moisture and natural oils, smooth the cuticle, enhance body, and add noticeable shine. Hair often feels thicker, silkier, and more resilient after use.
Hair Care Benefits of Henna
Henna supports hair health primarily through physical interaction with the hair shaft rather than chemical alteration.
- Strengthens Hair: Coats the hair shaft and helps fill in microscopic gaps along damaged strands, improving strength and resilience
- Conditions & Smooths: Tightens and smooths the cuticle, helping hair feel softer and more manageable
- Enhances Shine & Body: Creates a reflective surface along the hair shaft for increased shine and fullness
- Supports Scalp Balance: Naturally occurring tannins help keep the scalp clean and balanced
- Protective Coating: Helps hair retain moisture and reduces friction that can contribute to breakage
How We Use Henna
We use organic henna exclusively in our nourishing Henna Natural Shampoo Bar. The henna-infused bar moisturizes, cleans, and helps strengthen hair strands.
This natural shampoo bar is not a henna hair dye and is not intended to color hair. Instead, the henna helps coat and condition the hair shaft, leaving hair clean, moisturized, and noticeably shinier.
Henna is a time-tested botanical that offers more than color alone. When used thoughtfully, it provides structure, shine, and conditioning support—making it a valuable ingredient for hair care focused on strength, balance, and long-term hair health.
