Tapioca Flour
Nature’s Talc-Free Powder for Silky Skin
Tapioca Flour, Manihot esculenta, is a naturally derived, gluten-free starch extracted from the root of the cassava plant. Native to South America and now cultivated throughout tropical regions of the world, cassava has long been valued both as a food source and as a gentle botanical material used in traditional skin preparations.
In skincare, tapioca flour is prized for its exceptionally fine texture, high absorbency, and soft, silky feel. The powder is ultra-light and velvety, making it comfortable on the skin without feeling heavy, chalky, or drying.
One of tapioca flour’s most important roles in skincare is oil and moisture control. It absorbs excess sebum, sweat, and surface moisture while allowing the skin to breathe. Unlike some starches that can feel drying or gritty, tapioca flour leaves skin feeling smooth, calm, and balanced. This makes it especially useful in body powders, dry shampoos, and natural deodorants, where moisture management is essential but gentleness matters. It is a great substitute for cornstarch as well as a natural replacement for talc.
Tapioca flour also enhances the skin feel of creams and butters. When blended into oil-based formulations, it helps reduce greasiness and adds slip, allowing rich plant oils and butters to glide easily over the skin and absorb more evenly. The result is a lighter, silkier finish without compromising nourishment.
Because tapioca flour is non-comedogenic, non-irritating, and free from harsh processing, it is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and reactive skin. Its calming nature makes it particularly appropriate for delicate areas and frequent use.
Gentle Enough for Baby Skin
Tapioca flour is exceptionally gentle, which is why it has long been used as a natural alternative to talc and cornstarch in baby care. Its fine texture helps absorb moisture that can contribute to diaper rash or skin irritation, while remaining soft and breathable on fragile skin.
Unlike harsher absorbents, tapioca flour does not clog pores or strip the skin’s natural protective barrier. Instead, it helps keep skin dry, comfortable, and calm—qualities that are especially important for babies and young children. This makes it an ideal ingredient for organic baby powders, where purity, gentleness, and safety are essential.

How We Use Tapioca Flour
We use tapioca flour where softness, absorbency, and skin comfort matter most:

- Organic Deodorants: Supports moisture control and comfort while helping keep the skin dry and irritation-free.

- Organic Baby powder, its gentle, breathable nature helps keep delicate skin dry and calm
Not All Tapioca Starch Is the Same
Many cosmetic-grade versions are “modified tapioca starch,” altered to prevent clumping or to provide enhanced slip. These modifications are often achieved through undisclosed chemical processes, sometimes involving silicone-based additives, leaving consumers with little transparency about what remains in the final product. Our organic tapioca flour is completely unmodified, offering pure performance exactly as nature intended.
Tapioca Flour vs. Arrowroot Powder
Although the terms are frequently used interchangeably, tapioca and arrowroot powders are botanically distinct.
- Tapioca comes from the cassava root (Manihot esculenta).
- Arrowroot powder comes from the rhizomes of the Maranta arundinacea plant.
Both powders are prized in natural skincare for their ability to provide a soft, matte finish, absorb oils, soothe skin, and serve as natural alternatives to talc or cornstarch. However, tapioca flour offers superior slip and a uniquely silky texture, making it especially luxurious in body powders and dry shampoos.
Because suppliers sometimes mislabel these ingredients by common names, we always verify products using their botanical and INCI names to ensure accuracy and purity.
