A salve means simple, effective, natural healing. Organic herbal salves rely on the medicinal properties of nature, not synthetic chemicals. How did we heal and soothe our skin before synthetic products?
We looked to nature!
Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil is infused with Organic Calendula, Chamomile, and Lavender
How to Use
Directions: Apply liberally to affected area as often as needed. Within minutes bring the healing qualities of sea buckthorn oil, rosehips oil and organic herbs directly to your skin.
We use pure, virgin Sea Buckthorn oil, not an extract. This oil is unrefined, has not been bleached or deodorized and retains its natural scent, color, and nutritional benefits.
Note: We do not skimp on the Seabuckthorn oil. Unrefined Sea Buckthorn Oil has a deep color due to loads of beta-carotene and can cause temporary staining on clothes and fair skin.
We handcraft our Herbal Salves in small batches using organic oils and organic botanicals to ensure the highest quality and freshness. As a result, our organic salves have a natural shelf life. There are steps you can take to preserve the freshness of your salve.
- To prevent contamination use clean hands for application, avoid introducing moisture to the salve, and always keep the lid closed between uses.
- To ensure the best efficacy, our salves should be used within 6 months after opening.
- Always keep the salve in a temperature-stable environment.
As you research different healing oils or salves you will notice that although some target very specific problems, many have similar properties.
If the descriptions for Sea Buckthorn Salve, Tamanu Salve, and the Tamanu Sea Buckthorn Healing Oil seem very similar, that's because they all contain really great natural, but very different, bioactive ingredients that promote healing.
SEA BUCKTHORN OIL: Sea Buckthorn oil contains approximately 190 bioactive substances. It has a beneficial effect on the skin because it is a strong antioxidant and is rich in Omega fatty acids, beta-carotenes and vitamin E.
The moisturizing oil easily penetrates deep into the skin and has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbiological activity that helps promote healing and reduce scarring. It also may help kill the Demodex mites that can cause rosacea.
TAMANU OIL: Tamanu oil has been used in traditional medicine for ages, specifically for its ability to speed the healing of wounds by fighting bacteria and increasing cellular regeneration.
It also has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antibiotic, and antioxidant properties. What really sets tamanu oil apart from other oils is its unique chemical composition. It contains a unique fatty acid called Calophyllic acid, a natural antibiotic called Lactone, and a natural non-steroid anti-inflammatory agent called Calophyllolide.
Although salves are semi-solid at room temperature, they soften quickly once applied to the skin, making them very portable and less messy than oils.
To help you choose between the two salves, here are a few suggestions based on our experience and customer feedback.
- Sea Buckthorn Salve
- Fading old scars
- Minor burns
- Tamanu Salve
- Wound healing
- Healing new scars
- Fading stretch marks
- Soothing and healing itchy, irritated skin
- Minor burns
- Tamanu oil helps soothe and heal surgical scars. If using for fresh surgical scars please check with your healthcare provider.
So, what about the Tamanu Sea Buckthorn Healing Herbs Oil?
The oils plus the infused botanicals are highly emollient, chocked full of antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties that make it great for any kind of tissue in need of repair.
Some differences between healing salves and healing oil:
- Absorption Time
- Since herbal salves are made up of oils and beeswax, they will often sit on top of the skin and take a bit longer to penetrate the layers of the skin
- Sometimes you want penetration to take longer and last longer, like with a simple scrape--so use a salve
- Sometimes you may want faster relief, like when you have a burn--so use an oil
- Continued Hydration
- When you do not cover a scar, cut, or scrape it dries out and scabs over. A scab is not always a good thing because, especially if it forms too quickly, it can act as a barrier to healing
- You want to keep a cut moist to help prevent a scab from forming
- While both the oil and salve will keep the area moisturized, a salve will provide a moisture barrier that lasts longer than an oil
- If you choose to use only an oil, then use it more often to dab the area to keep it supple until new skin begins to grow
This product may be new to Chagrin Valley’s product line, but it is not new to me.
I formulated the recipe for our Tamanu Sea Buckthorn Healing Herbs Oils about five years ago. I wanted to create a concentrated oil using my two favorite healing oils that I could use in conjunction with our salves for healing surgical scars, burns, skin rashes and other irritations.
I tend to use both the healing oil and the salve. Sometimes I use the salves for the first few days or a week (depending on the problem) and then switch to the oil. For some surgical scars, I used both the oil and a salve every day for weeks.

We often receive emails and phone calls from customers with chronic irritated or inflamed skin problems.
We have learned that for some people simply switching to a natural product may help.
We believe that natural ingredients are milder, healthier and gentler on the skin. I often say that it’s what's NOT in our products, that is often the most helpful.
While we cannot promise that our products will help heal your inflamed or irritated skin conditions, we have received a lot of feedback from customers telling us that our products have helped soothe irritated skin problems.
We have used this feedback to create "Help Me Choose" pages for a variety of skin issues.
Pure essential oils, herbs, and other natural ingredients have been used for centuries. Their folklore and uses have been passed down through generations.
Please note that our products are NOT drugs or medicines meant to treat or cure illness, which would require FDA testing and approval. Our products are intended to help soothe irritated skin.
If you have sensitive skin issues, always try an allergy patch test before using a new product.
We often receive questions as to whether our soaps, shampoos, and other items are safe to use on young children.
A baby’s skin, so thin and delicate, is no place for harmful synthetic chemicals. Sadly, even some of the most trusted baby brands add nasty chemicals to their products.
Read the label on a bar of commercial baby soap or shampoo. Read the label on a bottle of commercial baby oil. Now read the ingredients in Chagrin Valley products.
We recommend starting with our Milk & Honey Baby Soap. We also recommend our three Castile soaps and Carrot & Honey Soap. They are unscented and, as with all of our products, contain no artificial ingredients!
My grandkids use our Milk & Honey bar as a baby shampoo--just keep the soap away from their eyes.
When you think your child is ready, try some new soaps.
As with all new products, it is best to do a skin patch test prior to full usage to test for any skin allergies or sensitivities. If you have any questions or concerns always check with your doctor or health care professional.
It is best to add only one new soap or product at a time and use it for a while before switching to a new soap.
Essential Oils & Children: We do not provide information on the safety of essential oils for use in Children because the available information is very ambiguous and often contradictory. If you are interested in using essential oils with young children please consult your health care professional before use.
Please do not ask us to diagnose your child's skin problems, we are not health care professionals. Our recommendations are based on what our customers have shared.
We often receive questions as to whether our soaps, shampoos, and other natural products are safe to use during pregnancy.
We recommend that expectant and nursing mothers check with their midwife or physician before changing a skincare routine with our organic products, or any other line of products.
Read the label on a bar of commercial soap. Read the label on your jar of moisturizer.
Now read the ingredients in a Chagrin Valley product.
We use quality natural and USDA Certified Organic ingredients. No synthetic additives, colorants, fragrances, preservatives, or chemical derivatives are used.
There is nothing in our all-natural basic soap or other products that could cause a problem in pregnancy.
Topically applying the herbs present in many of our soaps is also not a problem. Your skin will absorb much less herb from the soap than if you would sprinkle them on your food.
The issue that seems to be of most concern is the use of essential oils during pregnancy.
There is a lot of confusing, ambiguous, and inaccurate information concerning the use of essential oils in pregnancy.
The question of safety and safety testing has a lot to do with several factors.
The type and composition of the specific essential oil. Essential oils differ greatly in strength and composition.
The quality of the essential oil. Many "cheap essential oils" are not pure and maybe cut with synthetic chemicals.
The actual “dose” of herb/essential oils. Most of the clinical research on essential oil safety is based on information for internal (actually ingesting) large doses of herbs, essential oils, or herbal "medicines." Obviously there have been no tests done on pregnant women.
How the essential oil is being used. The concentration of essential oils that are absorbed through inhalation, as in aromatherapy, and massage is much lower than if you were actually ingesting the oil.
Also, aromatherapy and massage therapy use much higher concentrations of essential oils than you find in soap or even in eating the herb. With aromatherapy, you are inhaling the high concentrations which get absorbed via the lungs and in massage therapy, the essential oils remain on your skin and are absorbed.
Our scented soaps are gently scented with essential oils, but the choice is between you and your health care professional. The most critical time is the first trimester.
Soap does not remain on your skin very long and the percentage of essential oils used in our products is low. Remember we sell many soaps that have no added scent.
Just about every one of our products, like lip balms, whipped butters and deodorants has a "no added scent" version.
When there is a growing baby to consider, if you are at all uncertain as to the safety of an essential-oil containing product, or any ingredient, please consult your doctor, midwife, or health care professional!
When it comes to safety during pregnancy it is understandable that many massage therapists and aromatherapists decide to err on the side of caution in recommending the avoidance of certain essential oils.
Some Herbalists and Aromatherapist believe that essential oils that are normally safe to use, are safe during pregnancy, while others will recommend avoiding all essential oils during pregnancy.
Some essential oils that are normally quite safe have hormone-like effects and some even stimulate uterine muscles, both of which would be contraindicated during pregnancy.
Please do not ask us if one of our products is safe to use during pregnancy--we will simply refer you to this page.
We do not provide a list of essential oils considered safe during pregnancy because the information available is very contradictory. One aromatherapy source will list an essential oil as problematic while another one states it is fine. The information is changing constantly. Please do your own research and consult your doctor, midwife, or health care professional for the most up-to-date information.
Sensitive Skin Can Strike During Pregnancy
Even if you have never had sensitive skin in the past, you may notice that a product you have been using for several years now irritates your skin.
The stretching belly is often the most sensitive spot. Other potential problem areas include the hips, thighs, and bottom where the skin may become dry and flaky.
Although the exact cause is not known, raging hormones do make you more sensitive to a wide range of things, and also your skin is thinning and stretching as you, and your baby, grow.
These changes can behave in unpredictable ways. For example, if you have eczema you may suffer from major flare-ups or complete remission during pregnancy.
Keep your body well moisturized and avoid products that contain synthetic additives, colorants, fragrances, or preservatives. Any of these can exacerbate sensitive skin problems.
Before trying a new product, you can always do a patch test to test for sensitivity.
And again, we recommend that expectant and nursing mothers check with their midwife or physician before changing a skincare routine with our products, or any other line of products.
Pregnancy & Children: We do not provide information on the safety of essential oils during Pregnancy or for use in Children because the available information is very ambiguous and often contradictory. All of Chagrin Valley's natural soap, shampoo bars, and personal care products are certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny.
The Leaping Bunny Program was developed in 1996, by The Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC), to identify and support companies that are doing their part to help eliminate the unnecessary use and mistreatment of animals to test cosmetic products and ingredients. The CCIC is made up of eight animal protection groups including the Humane Society of the U.S., as well as groups from Canada and Europe.
At Chagrin Valley we obviously do not test our finished products on animals (other than human volunteers), but what about the raw materials, the ingredients we use? Many products display labels claiming that their finished product is ‘not tested on animals’ but this does not guarantee that the product ingredients are actually free from animal testing.
The CCIC Standard is a pledge that a company makes to remove animal testing from all stages of product development. Our pledge to buy ingredients that are cruelty-free is integrated into the purchase order contract for all of our suppliers.
Personal care products displaying the “real” Leaping Bunny logo are certified ‘cruelty-free' using the internationally recognized Humane Cosmetics Standards. These rigorous standards require that no animal testing is performed or authorized for finished products or ingredients in any stage of product development by the company, its laboratories or its suppliers after a fixed cut-off date. All Leaping Bunny companies are subject to independent audits and pledge commitments are renewed on an annual basis.
At Chagrin Valley Soap & Salve . . .

I am writing about the sea buckthorn salve. I love earrings but not the expensive ones, the inexpensive outrageous looking earrings. The problem is that even after 20 years since I got my ears pierced, my earlobes only like real gold (preferably 24k) backs. Wearing a pair of my fav earrings means that halfway through my evening my ears itch, burn, turn red and the earrings come out. It is so predictable that I even carry a small pouch in my purse just to toss my earring in. Neosporin helped a bit but I hated the idea of using antibiotic cream so often. I had your sea buckthorn salve (my little first aid kit in a can) so I decided to try it. I just wipe it all over the earring back, put it in my ear and I can now go the whole evening with earrings in my ears instead of my purse. It works better than neosporin and no extra antibitotics. I can now wear ALL of my awesome earrings. I wish I had found you a long time ago! My ears and earring collection thanks you guys! Hannah, Georgia
I wanted to thank you for your seabuckthorn salve. For years I was using a lip balm I was allergic to without realizing it. My lips were in awful condition until I realized what was happening. The same night I ditched that lip balm, I burned my upper lip badly with a depilatory cream. When nothing seemed to help, I grabbed this salve and spread it over my lips and the burn. The next morning the redness and swelling were almost completely gone, and my lips looked better than they had in years. They're healing very quickly and even plumping nicely, and a scar I have from gnawing my lower lip as a nervous habit is barely visible now. I'm also using the salve to fade old scars. Thank you for making this stuff. It's gold. Amy, Kentucky

Hello everyone! We have been buying your soaps and oils and other items for years now and love them since we are an organic and natural based family and I have to tell you about an incident with your amazing (and I mean this literally) oil. I was cooking our favorite chili last night and was moving the ground chicken and pork around the stock pot frying it and suddenly the oil that I had in there slopped out of the pan onto my hand (it was A LOT). Needless to say there were a few words said since it really, really hurt. I rinsed off my hand immediately and put ice on it as I have done in the past with cooking burns and this time it did not stop hurting at all, so I sat there with ice on my hand for 2 hours and thought maybe I should go to the ER since it was a much worse burn than I had ever had before in cooking. Then being my mothers daughter... I thought there must be something in my medicine cabinet that would help me. We had some Solarcaine spray and I thought this is nasty stuff with all the chemicals in it (then threw it away) and so looked in my basket of Chagrin Valley oils and saw this Seabuckthorn oil I had been using for cuts and abrasions and super chapped lips). On its label it said "promotes healing of burns...". So I thought I am trying it and I have to say it was AMAZING! Within seconds (very true) of putting this oil on my hand the burn stopped hurting and then I kept reapplying it for the rest of the evening and when I went to bed. In the morning when I got up my hand did not hurt and the redness from the burn was all but gone.
So, I am an info junky and my husband somewhat lovingly calls my iPad the "oracle", so I jumped on my iPad to research this oil. This oil is being studied across the world for its incredible ability to heal first and second degree burns with no scarring. It has been found to be a more effective burn remedy than the pharmaceuticals on the market and of course much less expensive and natural.
I will never use anything else for first and second degree burns in my home and I am ordering this for my sister, nieces and daughter so they can have the same healing oil in their homes too.
This is an AMAZING oil you have put together and you saved me a trip to the ER (my hubby was ready to take me in). My family has always believed in the old ways of healing and this is a fine example of how in many instances the old ways really do work better than new pharmaceuticals. Thank you so, so much!! Theresa, Washington
Hello, After a few orders now, I recently ordered the Seabuckthorn Salve to give to my Uncle that suffers from psoriasis. Before I gave it to him, I kept a little for myself and began using it on my face. I am happy to say that this stuff is incredible. I am 47 and have a few fine lines and beginning to show a little sagging in the face area, and have a bit of puffiness in the lower eyelids. I also have been using it on a scar under the chin. Again, I am happy to say that after only 1 week, I have actually noticed a difference; it even has diminished some spots (sun) on my face. Perhaps, you might consider advertising this as an age cream/salve, as it really does work wonders. Needless to say, I will be ordering more for myself. Julie, Florida
Recently, I ordered the Seabuckthorn salve to have on hand for minor burns and scratches. Then my facial skin went crazy! I am pregnant and it's dry with the winter weather, a combination that makes my skin dry, red, itchy, raw, bumpy, and irritated. It was painful even to smile! Desperate for extra moisture, I applied the salve liberally all over my face before bed one night. The next morning, I woke up without tight, itchy skin for the first time in months. I've kept it up, washing with your Seabuckthorn soap, misting lightly with alcohol-free cucumber and aloe witch hazel, and applying the salve to my damp face to trap in the moisture. My skin hasn't been this supple in years! Redness is eased, acne is nearly eliminated, and a scar I've had since childhood appears to be fading. My husband says I'm glowing, and I'm one of those pregnant women who gets a dull mask during pregnancy - glowing is a first, and this is my third child! If it didn't make me orange, I'd use it during the day as well. Never stop making this salve!! Thank you for making your fantastic products. You've got a customer for life! Jessica, California
Dear Chagrin Valley Team, I've been using your shampoos for a couple of months now and I swear, I'm still excited every time I'm about to shower. I'm so grateful my friend recommended your products to me. The reason I'm writing to you though is to thank you for the Seabuckthorn Rosehip Salve. I ordered it because my mom has eczema on her hands and I want her to stop putting those hormonal lotions on her skin. Before I got a chance to give it to her, I decided to try it on my face. My facial skin has been really dry for the past month. It's been flaking and scaly and it felt like I was wearing some kind of paper mask on myself. I also have rosacea so I've been avoiding really heavy creams. It was a lose-lose situation. This evening, I gave my face a facial scrub and put on a coating of the salve. The description didn't specifically mention dry skin but even some help with rosacea would have been welcomed. I left it for 3 or 4 hours, and just washed it off ten minutes ago. My skin... is so soft right now. It's so smooth and soft and so clean to the touch. I feel like it's finally breathing again. I'm not having a flareup of rosacea like I was afraid of, it didn't clog my pores, it didn't dry my skin out. It did the complete opposite. My skin feels cool and relaxed and moisturized and light. I can't even believe it. I feel like the past month never happened. Thank you so so much for this miracle in a container. The salve did for me in 4 hours what I couldn't fix in a month with any amount of scrubs or masks or moisturizers. I wish I could hug you guys. Yana, New York
Hi there, I've written before about your Goldenseal and Myrrh Salve, and now I'm writing again to rave about your Seabuckthorn Soap and Salve. I have very reactive, mildly rosasea'd skin that is often too dry in the winter and somewhat oily in the summer. I thought I had it more or less under control but I decided to switch from your Grapeseed soap to the Seabuckthorn and Tea Tree soap. I've really enjoyed the change, the soap is so mild and gentle it never strips my skin (Just what I've come to expect from you!) and the addition of tea tree oil seems to help with my occasionally clogged pores.
The real stunner is the Seabuckthorn salve though. I rub it all over my face after my usual wash and moisturize routine before bed and my skin always feels so calm and nourished in the morning. My rosasea flush is minimized and even though I was afraid it would be too heavy for my pores, they are doing better even with the summer heat coming on. And that's not all! My Fiance recently had a broken collarbone and elbow surgically repaired and I used the salve on his surgical scars after the staples were removed and we got the OK from the Dr. I was so worried he'd have these big raised "train tracks" from the staples but they are so smooth and soft now. I've also used the salve on my irritated bikini line after waxing and it settled down overnight, no chicken bumps here! It's truly a great product and I'll be keeping it on hand for years to come, I don't even mind the orange color! Danielle, California
