Castor Bean Oil
Deep Hydration for Skin & Hair
Castor Bean Oil, Ricinus communis, also known as Palma Christi oil, is expeller-pressed from the castor bean plant. It is a unique, thick, viscous oil made up of 90% of one fatty acid, ricinoleic acid—an unusual fatty acid responsible for its remarkable emollient and humectant properties.
Rich in fatty acids, castor oil acts as a soothing, lubricating moisturizer that helps attract and retain hydration in the skin. Its natural humectant quality makes it especially beneficial for dry complexions. Prized for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial characteristics, castor oil helps support clear, balanced skin by discouraging the growth of blemish-causing bacteria and easing irritation.
Castor oil is also an excellent ingredient in facial cleansing oils. As you gently massage it into the skin, it acts as a natural astringent—dissolving makeup, dirt, and excess oil while leaving the skin soft, clean, and hydrated.
In soapmaking, castor oil contributes mildness and luxurious lather, enhancing bubbles and conditioning properties. It helps create a rich, creamy foam that leaves skin feeling moisturized rather than stripped.
In hair care, castor oil is valued for its ability to coat and protect the hair shaft, sealing in moisture and smoothing the cuticle for added shine and softness. It’s often used in conditioners and hot oil treatments for brittle or damaged hair, as well as to help nourish the scalp and reduce dryness.
We use USDA Certified Organic castor oil expeller pressed from Ricinus communis seeds. The oil is then filtered, resulting in a bland, lightly tinted oil.
While the raw castor bean contains a natural toxin (ricin), the oil itself is not poisonous—a fact often misunderstood online. For more information read our blog "Castor Bean Oil in Skin Care"
