Product Overview

Our Extra Strength Simply Natural Organic Cream Deodorant is a soft solid that melts easily into the skin and absorbs without heaviness. Made with nourishing plant oils and moisture-absorbing botanicals, it helps keep underarms feeling dry, balanced, and comfortably fresh.

We call this our extra strength formula because it contains more baking soda than our stick deodorants. Baking soda helps shift the underarm environment so odor-causing bacteria are less likely to thrive, making it a preferred choice for those who need stronger natural odor support — especially during warmer months or increased activity.

Organic tapioca flour helps absorb moisture while leaving a soft, dry finish. A base of organic virgin coconut oil, shea butter, and jojoba oil nourishes and comforts delicate underarm skin, supporting smooth application and healthy-feeling skin.

Simply Natural contains no added essential oils or fragrance. It carries only the faint, natural aroma of its organic plant ingredients — clean, subtle, and barely noticeable once applied.

Organic plant oils, beeswax, moisture-absorbing botanicals, and baking soda — that's it — effective and intentionally simple.

How To Use

Basic Cream Deodorant Application

  • Scoop out a pea-sized amount using clean fingers. It may not look like much, but a little truly goes a long way.
  • Apply it to the center of your clean, dry underarm.
  • Gently massage as it melts on warm skin, just as you would apply a moisturizer.
  • Allow it to absorb fully before dressing (about a minute or two).
  • If the cream feels sticky, you’ve likely used too much. Start small — more is not better.
  • In colder months, allow the cream to sit against the skin for a few seconds before massaging. The warmth of your skin will soften it for a smoother application with minimal friction.
  • Do not apply immediately after shaving or on broken skin.
Ida’s Favorite Technique

For me, one pea-sized amount is enough for both underarms.

  • I scoop a pea-sized amount with my right index finger, then rub the cream between two fingers on each hand.
  • Using one finger per underarm, I gently massage the deodorant into the skin until it disappears.
  • Warming the cream between your fingers first helps create a smoother, more uniform application.
  • Of course, we don’t all have the same size underarms. Some people may prefer a pea-sized amount per side.
  • Start small and adjust as needed.

Reapplying

If needed, you may reapply throughout the day.

Wipe underarms clean with a damp cloth or paper towel, pat dry, and reapply.

Applying over perspiration or unclean skin may cause irritation.

Prefer Not to Use Your Fingers?

We recommend fingertips for the best control and most even application, but there are other options:

  • Use the rounded back of a small spoon to scoop and gently massage the cream into the skin.
  • Use a small stick (like a popsicle stick) to scoop out the cream, then massage it in with your fingers.
  • One customer created a custom applicator using round glass beads or marbles.
  • Try our reusable oval bamboo spatula for a sustainable option.

A Few Important Notes

  • We always recommend a Patch Test the first time you try any new product, especially if you have sensitive skin.
  • Discontinue use if irritation occurs.
  • Store in a cool, dry place.
  • Cream deodorants may soften in warm temperatures. This does not affect performance. If melting occurs, stir gently and refrigerate for about 30 minutes to firm.

Our cream deodorants are not happy in hot mailboxes or on sunny porches. Please be sure to pick up your package ASAP once it arrives.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an "Armpit Detox" when switching to natural deodorant?

The Armpit Detox Myth

Many people transition seamlessly to a natural deodorant. Others report a transition period.

I do not believe in "armpit detox" the way in which it is described by many companies that sell natural deodorant. Armpit "detox" is simply a normal adjustment period.

We have all heard about detox diets and cleanses for your body. Well now some people are advocating a detox for armpits. The ritual usually involves mixing up armpit masks made with charcoal, clays, or apple cider vinegar and applying them to your armpits to supposedly help “detox” the harmful chemicals that may have built up due ingredients in conventional deodorant or antiperspirants.

The idea behind the armpit detox is that it helps make the transition from an aluminum-based antiperspirant to a natural deodorant easier. However, there is no evidence that an underarm detox will reduce odor or make your new natural deodorant more effective.

Natural Deodorant Armpit Detox Mask MythCommercial deodorants and antiperspirants change the types and amounts of bacteria in the armpit which explains why you may sweat more and have a change in body odor initially.

Please do not allow a company to tell you that the increase in odor and/or sweat is the result of your body expelling or flushing out toxins. Your body has a great natural detox system that includes your liver and your kidneys, but your skin--not so much.

What people call and Armpit "detox" is simply a normal adjustment period. You do NOT need to buy armpit "detox" kits.

A simple wash with a gentle soap and water will remove antiperspirant or deodorant on your skin and help control odor.

Our bodies are quite resistant to change. Our bodies enjoy the status quo. They see change as a disruption and often resist change even if it is a positive one.

The bottom line--our body needs time to adjust to change and since each of us is a unique individual and our armpit microbiome is different the timeline varies from person to person.

Ultimately, it depends on your unique body chemistry.

Since there was so much information I wanted to share, I have written two blogs:

Part 1: Transitioning To Natural Deodorant, discusses the why you may experience an adjustment period as well as the possible causes of irritation and or rashes that some may experience when switching from a conventional antiperspirant or deodorant to an all natural deodorant.

Part 2: Transitioning To Natural Deodorant, provides some suggestions to help with the adjustment period and or to help alleviate the causes of irritation. Part 2 also answers some common questions about using a natural deodorant.

Why Is Underarm Skin More Sensitive?

Did you ever notice that so many people are ticklish under their arm? Your underarms are one of the most sensitive parts of your body.

Why Are Underarms More Sensitive?
  • Underarm skin is a bit thinner than the skin on other parts of your body
  • Underarm skin is not exposed to outside elements which can make skin tougher
  • Underarms usually get very little sunlight
  • The warm, moist environment is a breeding ground for bacteria
  • The friction that occurs when underarms rub against skin or clothing can cause skin irritation
  • Underarms are home to lots of nerves and lymph nodes

You may notice that you can feel a simple touch more than you can on other areas of the body. When you add up all of these factors you can see why underarm skin is not only more sensitive, but also more prone to irritation.

Underarm Care
  • Keep your underarms clean

  • Shaving can really irritate sensitive skin
    • Be sure to moisturize after shaving
    • Shave at night before bedtime to allow the skin to heal a bit overnight

  • Underarm pores can get clogged, so it is a good idea to gently exfoliate the area periodically
    • Since this area is so sensitive, use the gentler products madde to exfoliate your face rather than your body
    • Do not use scratchy accessories, like loofahs, when washing which may irritate sensitive skin

  • Use a natural, organic, moisturizing deodorant

How To Use A Natural Deodorant: Basic Instructions

Our natural deodorants neutralize odor and help absorb wetness using plant-based ingredients — no plastic packaging or synthetic additives.
But sometimes success depends less on the formula and more on how it’s applied.

Below you’ll find instructions for both our cream deodorants and our stick deodorants, since each format applies a little differently.

How To Apply Natural Cream Deodorant

Cream deodorant applies differently from a stick. A small amount is all you need, and gentle application makes the biggest difference.

How to apply Natural Organic Cream DeodorantStep-by-Step:
  • Scoop out a pea-sized amount using clean fingers. It may not look like much, but a little truly goes a long way.
  • Apply it to the center of your clean, completely dry underarm.
  • Gently massage as it softens and melts against warm skin — just as you would apply a facial moisturizer.
  • Allow it to absorb fully before dressing (about one to two minutes).
  • To prevent irritation, do not apply to broken skin or immediately after shaving.
  • Do not apply immediately after shaving or on broken skin.

If the cream feels sticky, you’ve likely used too much.
Start small — more is not better.

Don't Want To Use Your Fingers to Scoop Out the Deodorant?

Scoop up a pea-sized amount onto the rounded back of a small spoon. Use the spoon to apply and gently massage the deodorant into your skin. Try our Bamboo Spatula.

Temperature Matters

Because our cream deodorants are made with natural oils and butters, they respond to temperature changes.

  • In colder months, let the cream rest against your skin for a few seconds before massaging. The warmth of your skin will soften it for smoother, lower-friction application.
  • In warmer months, the cream may feel softer. This does not affect performance — simply use a slightly smaller amount.
A Helpful Cream Application Technique

This simple approach has worked well for me and for many customers.

Many people find that one pea-sized amount is enough for both underarms.

Scoop a pea-sized amount with clean fingers, then gently rub the cream between two fingers on each hand.

Using two fingers per underarm, massage the deodorant into the skin until it softens and disappears.

Warming the cream between your fingers first allows it to soften slightly, creating a smoother, more even application with less friction.

As always, start small and adjust as needed — underarm size and preference vary.

How To Apply Natural Stick Deodorant

Natural stick deodorant applies differently from conventional deodorant. Because it’s made with more beeswax, plant oils, and butters, it responds to warmth — and a thin layer works best.

Person holding a Woodland Breeze deodorant stick near their armpit in a bathroom setting.Step-by-Step:
  • Apply daily to clean, completely dry underarms.
  • Give the stick a moment against your skin so your natural warmth can soften the surface. This ensures a smooth, even application and helps prevent irritation from friction.
  • Once softened, gently swipe 1–2 times per underarm. A very thin layer is all you need.
  • Give it a minute to absorb before putting on clothing.

If the stick feels draggy or you notice residue, you’re likely using too much or applying before it has softened. Start light — more is not better.

Temperature Matters

Because this formula contains natural waxes and butters, texture will shift with temperature.

  • In cooler weather, warm the tube between your hands for 10–15 seconds before applying.
  • In warmer temperatures, the stick may feel softer. This does not affect performance — simply use a lighter swipe.
How to Dispense the Stick
  • Remove the cap and gently push up from the base of the tube to expose a small amount.
  • After applying, tap the bottom of the tube on a firm surface to allow the product to slide back down before replacing the cap.
  • Do not press it down from the top.

A Few Final Notes

Natural deodorants work with your body — not by blocking sweat, but by helping manage odor and moisture more gently. Because everyone’s skin is different, finding the right amount and application style may take a few days of adjustment.

  • If you’re switching from a conventional antiperspirant, you may notice temporary changes as your underarms return to their normal rhythm. Give your skin time to rebalance.
  • Always start with a small amount and adjust as needed — underarm size and preference vary.
  • Apply only to dry skin. Oil and water do not blend well, and dampness can increase friction or transfer product to clothing.
  • Do not apply immediately after shaving or on broken skin.
  • These are deodorants, not antiperspirants. They do not block sweat.
  • If you have sensitive skin or are trying a new formula, we recommend a patch test first.
  • Discontinue use if irritation persists.
  • Store in a cool, dry place.
  • Best if used within 6 months of opening.

A little patience, the right formula, and thoughtful application are usually all it takes.

Why are there little white beads or specks in some products?

The whitish specks are concentrated beads of nourishing plant butters which solidify into little butter bits as they cool.

Natural unrefined and unprocessed butters, like our Virgin Shea and Cocoa, will occasionally separate in some products with changes in temperature.

Although we see the little beads most often in the Summer months, changes in temperature as the products make their journey can happen any time of year. The concentrated beads of butter will melt as you massage the product into your skin.

Our goal is to create the best natural, wholesome, nourishing skincare possible, so we formulate our products without synthetic stabilizers, emulsifiers, or waxes.

Most companies do not use unrefined or virgin botanical butters because they are so difficult to work with, but we know that unrefined butters are much more nourishing!

For more information read our "Shea Butter Tutorial."

What If My Natural Skincare Product Melts in Warm Weather?

Why Do Some Products Melt in Warm Weather?

We do not use synthetic stabilizers or waxes, so our delicate natural products packaged in glass jars and metal tins are sensitive to temperature changes.

While shipping during warm weather seasons presents a real challenge to our natural skin care company, we accept the challenge in order to maintain our standard of natural and nourishing skin care. We hope you agree.

During warm weather, products may soften or even melt as they sit in warm mail trucks, mailboxes, or on front porches.

The quality and healing properties of our products are not affected by melting.

On very sunny or warm days, BEFORE opening the jars or tins, place the items in your refrigerator for a few hours to allow them to harden, just in case they have melted in transit. If you open items, especially those in tins, to check if melting has occurred, they may spill and make a mess!

What To Do About Melting

Cream Deodorants

If you think that your balm-like deodorant is melted or runny, BEFORE opening the jar, pop it in the freezer for 10 - 15 minutes. As it begins to harden give it a stir (so that the solids do not sink to the bottom) and place it back in the freezer until firm!

Sometimes a cream deodorant can melt during warm transit and then slowly re-solidify before you receive it. This melting and slow cooling can result in a grainy feeling. If your deodorant feels grainy, simply melt it, mix thoroughly, and place it in the refrigerator until solid.

Since the stick deodorant are made with more beeswax, they are less sensitive to an increase in outside temperature.

Whipped Body Butters

Place a melted body butter in the refrigerator until firm.

Our hand-whipped process adds tiny air bubbles that increase the volume, just like whipping cream. If a whipped product melts, the air bubbles collapse and the volume is decreased.

So, although the jar was filled to the top initially, there will be less volume in the container (since it has deflated) and the container may actually look half full.

After cooling a melted Whipped Butter will be the consistency of our body balm and is still a great moisturizer.

Sugar Scrubs

If a Sugar Scrub melts, the oil may separate out a bit. Give it a good mix and place it in the refrigerator for about 10 to 15 minutes. As it begins to harden up give it another stir to disperse the sugars and place it back in the refrigerator. Once it's solidified and mixed it will be great to use! Again because it is a whipped product, the container may have less volume when the whipped butters melt.

Are Chagrin Valley Ingredients & Products USDA Certified Organic?

Chagrin Valley Soap & Salve is a USDA Certified Organic Company

Certified Organic Skin Care

The most important consideration in any business is its customers. Today's world of misleading claims, false advertising, and simple deception, often leaves consumers trying to discover the truth about personal products and their ingredients.

  • We want our customers to know that we are committed to transparency in everything we do.
  • We want our customers to know that when we say "organic," we mean it.
  • We believe that in becoming a USDA Certified Organic company, our customers do not have to wonder if we really use certified organic ingredients or if our organic products are truly organic.
  • So we choose to be a certified organic company and abide by the strict standards required for organic certification.

Some of my favorite products are made with ingredients that just do not exist as certified organic. Why? At this time there are no standards created for ingredients specifically used in the personal care product industry. Organic certification of personal care products is based on the organic food standards set by the National Organic Program of the USDA.

But since we are a certified organic company, we are required to submit documentation that even our "non-organic ingredients" were produced without the use of toxic pesticides, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), sewage sludge, or irradiation.

Can I Use Your Natural Skincare Products While Pregnant or Nursing?

Natural Organic Skin Care for Babies & InfantsWe often receive questions as to whether our soaps, shampoos, and other natural products are safe to use during pregnancy.

We recommend that expectant and nursing mothers check with their midwife or physician before changing a skincare routine with our organic products, or any other line of products.

Read the label on a bar of commercial soap. Read the label on your jar of moisturizer.

Now read the ingredients in a Chagrin Valley product.

We use quality natural and USDA Certified Organic ingredients. No synthetic additives, colorants, fragrances, preservatives, or chemical derivatives are used.

There is nothing in our all-natural basic soap or other products that could cause a problem in pregnancy.

Topically applying the herbs present in many of our soaps is also not a problem. Your skin will absorb much less herb from the soap than if you would sprinkle them on your food.

Essential Oils

The issue that seems to be of most concern is the use of essential oils during pregnancy.

There is a lot of confusing, ambiguous, and inaccurate information concerning the use of essential oils in pregnancy.

The question of safety and safety testing has a lot to do with several factors.

  • The type and composition of the specific essential oil. Essential oils differ greatly in strength and composition.

  • The quality of the essential oil. Many "cheap essential oils" are not pure and maybe cut with synthetic chemicals.

  • The actual “dose” of herb/essential oils. Most of the clinical research on essential oil safety is based on information for internal (actually ingesting) large doses of herbs, essential oils, or herbal "medicines." Obviously there have been no tests done on pregnant women.

  • How the essential oil is being used. The concentration of essential oils that are absorbed through inhalation, as in aromatherapy, and massage is much lower than if you were actually ingesting the oil.

But also, aromatherapy and massage therapy use much higher concentrations of essential oils than you find in soap or even in eating the herb. With aromatherapy, you are inhaling the high concentrations which get absorbed via the lungs and in massage therapy, the essential oils remain on your skin and are absorbed.

Our scented soaps are gently scented with essential oils, but the choice is between you and your health care professional. The most critical time is the first trimester.

Just about every one of our products, like lip balms, whipped butters, soaps, shampoos, and deodorants has a "no added scent" version.

When there is a growing baby to consider, if you are at all uncertain as to the safety of an essential-oil containing product, or any ingredient, please consult your doctor, midwife, or health care professional!

When it comes to safety during pregnancy it is understandable that many massage therapists and aromatherapists decide to err on the side of caution in recommending the avoidance of certain essential oils.

Some Herbalists and Aromatherapist believe that essential oils that are normally safe to use, are safe during pregnancy, while others will recommend avoiding all essential oils during pregnancy.

Some essential oils that are normally quite safe have hormone-like effects and some even stimulate uterine muscles, both of which would be contraindicated during pregnancy.

Please do not ask us if one of our products is safe to use during pregnancy--we will simply refer you to this page.

We do not provide a list of essential oils considered safe during pregnancy because the information available is very contradictory. One aromatherapy source will list an essential oil as problematic while another one states it is fine.

The information is also changing constantly. Please do your own research and consult your doctor, midwife, or health care professional for the most up-to-date information.

Sensitive Skin Can Strike During Pregnancy

Even if you have never had sensitive skin in the past, you may notice that a product you have been using for several years now irritates your skin.

The stretching belly is often the most sensitive spot. Other potential problem areas include the hips, thighs, and bottom where the skin may become dry and flaky.

Although the exact cause is not known, raging hormones do make you more sensitive to a wide range of things, and also your skin is thinning and stretching as you, and your baby, grow.

These changes can behave in unpredictable ways. For example, if you have eczema you may suffer from major flare-ups or complete remission during pregnancy.

Keep your body well moisturized and avoid products that contain synthetic additives, colorants, fragrances, or preservatives. Any of these can exacerbate sensitive skin problems.

Before trying a new product, you can always do a patch test to test for sensitivity.

And again, we recommend that expectant and nursing mothers check with their midwife or physician before changing a skincare routine with our products, or any other line of products.

Pregnancy & Children: We do not provide information on the safety of essential oils during Pregnancy or for use in Children because the available information is very ambiguous and often contradictory. If you’re interested in using essential oils during pregnancy or with young children please do your own research and consult your doctor, midwife, or health care professional before use.

Is There an Expiration Date On My Natural Skincare Product?

Product Expiration Dates

Natural Organic Skin Care ProductsWe hand make all of our own products in small batches to ensure freshness, consistency, and perfection.

Our products are not made to sit on store shelves for years and years.

Although there are natural preservatives within the chemical structure of many natural ingredients, they not as potent as the synthetic preservatives used in commercial products to prolong shelf-life.

Other than soap, our products are remade every few weeks and none are very old when they are sold. Our non-soap products should be opened within 6 months of purchase.

Since we use no preservatives or chemical stabilizers, the more important question is, "how long will the product last once it has been opened?

Once opened, skin care products become exposed to dirt and microorganisms (bacteria, yeasts, and molds) that are found in the air and on the skin.

As soon as you open and begin to use any product, simply the way in which you use it will affect its lifespan.

So, we use the PAO (period-after-opening) symbol. These symbols are already available on the product pages of our website and we are in the process of adding them to all of our labels.

The POA symbol is a standard symbol that identifies the useful lifetime of a skin care product after it has been opened for the first time.

Natural Skin Care Use within 9 months after opening logoAs you can see from the picture, the symbol is an open jar with a written number and the letter "M" for the word "months."

A product with a "9M" would mean that it is good for 9 months after opening.

Tip: write the date you open a product for the first time on its label so you can keep track of the period after opening.

Our POA number represents our best suggestion. There are many factors that can affect the lifespan of a product. If a product is discolored, has an unpleasant smell or looks odd, the product should not be used and should be discarded.

  • Each time you place your warm fingers into a tin or jar, you melt some of the butter which can change the consistency of the product.
  • Fingers also introduce bacteria and other contaminants into the product.
  • If a product has not been stored properly, for example, if the lid has been left off for long periods of time, the product may ‘go off’ before the period after opening has passed.
  • As scented products age, some of the natural essential oil scent may be lost. Pure essential oils just do not have the staying power of synthetic fragrance oils.
  • Over time, natural colors may also fade.

If you’re like me, and you find an old dusty product hiding in a drawer, makeup bag, or even a suitcase from your last trip, you can call us with the lot number and we can verify its age. Obviously, if it seems off in any way, toss it!

Please note: This PAO symbol is widely used in Europe to recommend the length of time a product remains usable after opening, for products that have a shelf-life of at least 30 months. Our products do NOT have a shelf-life of 30 months before opening.
