Product Overview

When darker hair needs a quick refresh, our organic Fresh Locks™ Dry Shampoo brings back clean, touchable volume without leaving a pale or powdery cast. This gentle blend absorbs excess oil at the roots, revives flat or lifeless areas, and leaves hair looking naturally full and freshly scented.

The base — organic tapioca flour, organic cornstarch, kaolin clay, organic burdock root, and organic plantain — works together to refresh the hair without heaviness. A touch of cocoa powder helps the formula blend smoothly into brown, black, or deep auburn hair so it disappears on the scalp and looks completely natural.

It’s the perfect pick‑me‑up after the gym, between wash days, when traveling or camping—anytime your hair needs a little boost.

How To Use
How to Use a Dry Shampoo Powder
  • Apply to dry hair, focusing on the roots where oil tends to build up.
  • Part hair into small sections and apply a small amount of powder using a brush, fingertips, or by lightly sprinkling from the tube.
  • Gently massage into the scalp and allow the powder to sit for a minute or two to absorb excess oil. Then brush or tousle hair to distribute evenly and remove any excess.
  • Use sparingly—you can always add more if needed.
Tips
  • Apply a little at a time for best results
  • Focus on the oiliest areas, not the entire head
  • For a deeper refresh, apply before bedtime and let it work overnight
  • Apply near your part, not directly on it, to avoid visible powder

Reviews

Great

"This is a great dry shampoo. I watched the video to learn how to apply it better. It’s taking some practice but it does help. I like the packaging as well."

Love this product!

"I've been using this dry shampoo for seven years and it is my absolute favorite! It blends with my dark hair, smells beautifully, and it leaves minimal residue/crunchy feeling of dry shampoos. Also, thank you for making your packaging as low-waste as possible!"

Andrea N. (5/5)

Ordering from across the country because nothing else will do :)

"Excellent product. Love that it is plastic-free, non-aerosol, and made for brown hair. My daughter tried switching to an expensive trendy brand (LP)-- it smelled so artificial, and she was late to school the next morning because her brown hair was still white. Back to Chagrin Valley! Please don't ever stop making this :)"

Erin W. (5/5)

tried and true!

"My teenage daughter loves this product!! Been using it for years! Great to use on after school hair before an evening event or on bed hair before school. Not too heavy, does the job well without any harmful ingredients. (BTW it smells amazing!)"

Ana (5/5)

Nearly perfect!

"I use this product to enhance the color of my lighter blonde hair near my forehead/face. The dark hair dry “powder” once blended works perfectly; my hair turns a nice honey blonde. Love it! Can recommend others try this trick! My only issue is the delivery system ie many holes in the flat top. I’ve had to rig a half circle panel in order to sprinkle a manageable amount of product. p. s. other methods of imparting the powder haven’t worked for me, might be my lack of dexterity🙃"

Susanne S. (5/5)

The best!

"The best (and healthiest/safest) dry shampoo product for dark hair! I absolutely love this stuff!"

Erin G. (5/5)

Definitely Want This!

"Smells amazing, a medium tone color to blend better with darker hair, & great absorption."

Manda B. (5/5)

Just starting using the product

"Just starting using the product for about two weeks. So far I like the product. It's a little difficult to sprinkle the dry shampoo on the head. Maybe it's the design of the tube?"

Monica H. (4/5)

"Love"

Thanh (5/5)

Smaller size!

"Was 6 oz, now 2. 2 oz in a container less than half the size. Not worth $18. 99. I'll make my own going forward."

Q&A

I have a very snuggly cat that lays with me on my pillow at times. Will this be harmful to her if it’s in my hair? I’m concerned because I just read that lavender oil is toxic to cats. This never crossed my mind because of the fact that it’s organic and thought it would be safe. Thoughts?
Hi There, Thanks so much for reaching out! Using the dry shampoo on yourself should be okay for your cat as it is usually the direct application on the cat or diffusing it constantly around them that causes issues with essential oils! To make sure you are getting all the excess off your hair and not leaving as much on your sheets, you can run a blow drier through your hair after application. If you are concerned, we always recommend checking with your vet to see what they recommend as well! I hope this helps:) Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns and have a great rest of your day! -Christina, Chagrin Valley
Would this be ok for dark red hair?
Hello, Thanks so much for your question! Yes, the Dark Hair Lavender Rosemary Dry Shampoo is a great option for darker red hair. There is cocoa powder in it that helps to reduce the white residue that some dry shampoo's can leave in darker roots. Thanks again for reaching out and please contact us at any time with additional questions!
About how many uses can I get out of this?
Hi There! The number of uses you can get out of our dry shampoo varies greatly with the user. We have customers who use it a few times a week just to freshen up their part or bangs, and say that one dry shampoo can last them a year. We also have customers who use the dry shampoo daily, and apply much more liberally (those with greasier hair, or those who prefer to wash it less) and use up the powder in a couple of months. The outcome is definitely different based on how it is being used. We hope that helps answer your question, and thank you for asking!
If I have dark blonde hair (not quite brown/brunette) should I get the dark or light dry shampoo?
Go with the light hair shampoo!
Is the dry shampoo packaged in plastic or cardboard? It looks like cardboard? Is the packaging recyclable?
Good Day! Our dry shampoo is packaged in a cardboard tube, it is recyclable and biodegradable. There is a tiny plastic disc on the top inside, which is turned to open and close the holes to release the powder, this small piece will need to be removed and thrown away before recycling. Thanks so much for asking, Sarah

Frequently Asked Questions

What are essential oils?

What Are Pure Essential Oils?

Have you ever enjoyed the scent of a fragrant flower or herb? The fragrance comes from potent, aromatic compounds called essential oils found in the flowers, stems, seeds, bark, roots, fruits, and other parts of plants. It often requires several pounds of a plant to produce a single bottle of essential oil.

Essential oils not only give plants their unique scents but also help lure plant pollinators and protect plants from insects and other predators.

The chemical composition of essential oils may provide valuable psychological and physical aromatherapeutic benefits for some people.

It is important to note that to be a true essential oil, the oil must be isolated from the plant material by physical means only. Essential oils are NEVER extracted using solvents.

Although synthetic fragrances or "nature identical" oils are available at a much lower cost, only natural plant essential oils will provide any aromatherapeutic benefits.

Are Chagrin Valley Ingredients & Products USDA Certified Organic?

Chagrin Valley Soap & Salve is a USDA Certified Organic Company

Certified Organic Skin Care

The most important consideration in any business is its customers. Today's world of misleading claims, false advertising, and simple deception, often leaves consumers trying to discover the truth about personal products and their ingredients.

  • We want our customers to know that we are committed to transparency in everything we do.
  • We want our customers to know that when we say "organic," we mean it.
  • We believe that in becoming a USDA Certified Organic company, our customers do not have to wonder if we really use certified organic ingredients or if our organic products are truly organic.
  • So we choose to be a certified organic company and abide by the strict standards required for organic certification.

Some of my favorite products are made with ingredients that just do not exist as certified organic. Why? At this time there are no standards created for ingredients specifically used in the personal care product industry. Organic certification of personal care products is based on the organic food standards set by the National Organic Program of the USDA.

But since we are a certified organic company, we are required to submit documentation that even our "non-organic ingredients" were produced without the use of toxic pesticides, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), sewage sludge, or irradiation.

Why Did We Become a Certified Organic Company?

What Do All of the Organic Labels Mean?

Organic Soap Labeling

View Answer Page
What Do The Different Organic Symbols Mean?

We use two different organic symbols on our website

Each symbol has a unique definition!

The "certified organic" labeling has been developed by the USDA and refers to organic claims and labeling on food and personal care products in the United States.

The USDA has very strict guidelines for the percentage of organic ingredients necessary to receive organic certification. Other countries have their own certification procedures, requirements, and standards. Labeling criteria and allowable ingredients differ from those in the US.

The USDA uses a structured labeling system based on the percentage of organic ingredients in a product (excluding water and salt-NaCl).

Products That Use the USDA Organic Seal

USDA Certified Organic Skin Care LogoThe USDA Organic Logo Label can be used on products that meet the standards of the first two tiers of the organic labeling system, in which 95 - 100% of all ingredients are certified organic.

Most of our non-soap products fall into this category and display the USDA logo!

Products That Use OEFFA Seal

Products made with 70–94.9% Organic Ingredients are labeled “Made with Organic ___”

Products like our soaps and shampoo bars are 85–92% organic and fall into the “Made With Organic Ingredients” category.

OEFFA Certified Organic Skin CareWhy Soap & Shampoo Bars? Because the soapmaking process requires lye — a non‑agricultural ingredient that makes up more than 5% of the formula — they cannot meet the 95% threshold, even though the rest of the ingredients are organic.

These products are not allowed to use the USDA organic seal. Instead, they may display the seal of our certifying agent and the words “Certified Organic by OEFFA.”

Chagrin Valley Soap is certified by OEFFA (Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association) — a nonprofit, USDA‑approved agency that verifies our organic ingredients and manufacturing processes.

Is There an Expiration Date On My Natural Skincare Product?

Product Expiration Dates

Natural Organic Skin Care ProductsWe hand make all of our own products in small batches to ensure freshness, consistency, and perfection.

Our products are not made to sit on store shelves for years and years.

Although there are natural preservatives within the chemical structure of many natural ingredients, they not as potent as the synthetic preservatives used in commercial products to prolong shelf-life.

Other than soap, our products are remade every few weeks and none are very old when they are sold. Our non-soap products should be opened within 6 months of purchase.

Since we use no preservatives or chemical stabilizers, the more important question is, "how long will the product last once it has been opened?

Once opened, skin care products become exposed to dirt and microorganisms (bacteria, yeasts, and molds) that are found in the air and on the skin.

As soon as you open and begin to use any product, simply the way in which you use it will affect its lifespan.

So, we use the PAO (period-after-opening) symbol. These symbols are already available on the product pages of our website and we are in the process of adding them to all of our labels.

The POA symbol is a standard symbol that identifies the useful lifetime of a skin care product after it has been opened for the first time.

Natural Skin Care Use within 9 months after opening logoAs you can see from the picture, the symbol is an open jar with a written number and the letter "M" for the word "months."

A product with a "9M" would mean that it is good for 9 months after opening.

Tip: write the date you open a product for the first time on its label so you can keep track of the period after opening.

Our POA number represents our best suggestion. There are many factors that can affect the lifespan of a product. If a product is discolored, has an unpleasant smell or looks odd, the product should not be used and should be discarded.

  • Each time you place your warm fingers into a tin or jar, you melt some of the butter which can change the consistency of the product.
  • Fingers also introduce bacteria and other contaminants into the product.
  • If a product has not been stored properly, for example, if the lid has been left off for long periods of time, the product may ‘go off’ before the period after opening has passed.
  • As scented products age, some of the natural essential oil scent may be lost. Pure essential oils just do not have the staying power of synthetic fragrance oils.
  • Over time, natural colors may also fade.

If you’re like me, and you find an old dusty product hiding in a drawer, makeup bag, or even a suitcase from your last trip, you can call us with the lot number and we can verify its age. Obviously, if it seems off in any way, toss it!

Please note: This PAO symbol is widely used in Europe to recommend the length of time a product remains usable after opening, for products that have a shelf-life of at least 30 months. Our products do NOT have a shelf-life of 30 months before opening.
