Why Facial Skin Needs Special Care

Facial skin is naturally more delicate than the rest of the body.

It contains more sebaceous glands, finer skin cells, and a higher concentration of pores — all of which make it more reactive to the environment and more prone to buildup.

As we age, the skin’s natural renewal process slows, allowing dead skin cells to linger on the surface and contribute to a dull or uneven appearance.

Natural Organic Facial Skin Care Products

Gentle, consistent care helps the skin feel balanced, comfortable, and refreshed.

Every complexion is unique, so a bit of experimentation is normal — and part of finding what feels best.

As you may expect, we come to any discussion of facial skin care with a very strong “natural skincare” bias.

We do not believe in miracle anti-aging skincare products. We believe in supporting skin that looks healthy and feels comfortable with simple, natural care.

The path to beautiful skin begins with natural, organic skin care products.

    Building a Simple Routine:
    • Cleanse: Use natural cleansing creams and natural soaps that gently cleanse without washing away precious natural oils
    • Moisturize: Moisturize with wholesome, organic facial care products to support hydration
    • Exfoliate: Gentle exfoliation with organic scrubs removes dead skin and unclogs pores
    • Optional Add-ons like clay masks, steams, or toners for extra clarity or softness

Below, you’ll find guidance for each step. Explore the options beneath each section to find the products that best match your skin’s needs.

Facial Cleansing: Where Do You Begin?

Washing your face is critical to maintaining healthy-looking skin.

Each day, dirt, makeup, pollution, and other impurities can become trapped within the natural oil on our face, clogging pores.

Wash twice a day, morning and night, to avoid dull, lifeless skin, clogged pores, and breakouts. Proper washing also provides a clean surface that allows moisturizers to better penetrate the skin to give the skin a fresh look.

Facial Cleansing: If You Wear Makeup

Begin with a Natural Cleansing Oil

It may sound counterintuitive, but cleansing with the right organic plant oils is one of the gentlest and most effective ways to remove makeup and daily buildup.

    Natural Organic Facial Cleansing Oil

The idea comes from a simple chemistry principle: like dissolves like. Makeup and excess sebum are oil-based, so oils dissolve them easily without harsh rubbing or pulling on delicate facial skin.

While soap can remove makeup, it often requires more friction and repeated washing. A cleansing oil gently loosens makeup, dirt, and excess oil so they can be wiped away easily, leaving skin feeling clean and comfortable.

This method works for all skin types, even oily skin. When skin is repeatedly stripped of its natural oils, it often responds by producing even more oil. Cleansing with gentle oils helps maintain balance rather than encouraging excess oil production.

    Cleansing oils are especially helpful:
    • As the first step when removing makeup
    • For any skin type exposed to pollution and daily buildup
    • For dry or sensitive skin
    • Even when you wear water-based makeup or no makeup at all — skin still collects oil and debris throughout the day

And always remember: removing makeup before sleep gives your skin a chance to rest and restore overnight.

    Facial Cleansing: Washing Your Face

Washing your face twice a day is one of the simplest ways to keep skin feeling clean and comfortable.

At night, cleansing removes dirt, excess oil, makeup residue, and environmental pollutants that accumulate during the day. In the morning, washing helps remove the natural oils your skin produces overnight, leaving skin feeling fresh rather than dull or sluggish.

Accessory: Organic Cotton Face ClothWashing your face gently lifts away surface buildup, helping moisturizers work more effectively afterward.

You are also softening the skin, massaging the muscles, and exfoliating for a clearer, brighter complexion.

Some people hesitate to use bar soap on their face, but a mild natural soap can cleanse beautifully without stripping away precious natural oils.

If something is going on my face every day, I want it to be gentle and made with ingredients I trust. For me, that means natural soap.

    How to Wash Your Face

First, rinse with lukewarm water to moisten the skin. In your hands, work up a nice lather.

Using your fingertips, slowly and gently massage in upward circular motions into your skin. Think about massaging the muscles under the skin rather than just the skin. You don't want to be so gentle that you can't really feel anything, but you do not want to pull and tug on the skin either.

Adding a soft cotton face cloth or face pad to your cleansing massage can help with daily gentle exfoliation.

After washing, the skin should be thoroughly rinsed with cool or tepid water. Use a soft cotton cloth or towel, and remember to pat dry.

Do Not Rub! Rubbing and tugging facial skin can create bags and lead to wrinkles over time.

Buttercream Face Wash: A Unique Treat

Some people prefer a cleanser that feels more like a cleansing cream than a soap. Buttercream Face Wash is a facial soap and moisturizer all in one product.

    Moisturizing Facial Skin

Once skin is clean, the next step is helping it stay soft and comfortably hydrated.

A good moisturizer helps slow moisture loss and keeps skin feeling smooth and balanced.

And moisturizing isn’t just for dry skin — every skin type benefits from maintaining proper hydration. When skin becomes too dry, it may feel tight, sensitive, or even produce excess oil in an effort to compensate.

The best time to moisturize is right after cleansing, when skin is still slightly damp and warm. Creams and oils spread more easily at this stage and help seal in moisture.

As we age, skin naturally becomes thinner and loses some of its ability to retain moisture, and seasonal changes often mean your skin’s needs shift throughout the year.

Rather than chasing miracle claims, choosing simple, nourishing moisturizers that work with your skin usually provides the best long-term results.

Creams or Facial Oils — Which Should You Choose?

Both facial creams and facial oils help maintain moisture and keep skin feeling soft and comfortable. The best choice depends on how your skin feels and what texture you prefer.

Some people like a lighter cream during the day and reach for an oil at night, while others use just a cream, just an oil, or both, depending on how their skin feels.

There’s no single right choice — your skin will usually tell you what feels best.

    Facial Oils

Facial oils are simple blends of nourishing plant oils that many people love for dry, sensitive, or mature skin. Oils are especially helpful when skin feels tight, flaky, or stressed, and they’re often preferred during colder months.

Each of our facial oil blends is crafted with different plant oils chosen to support different skin preferences, and many customers switch oils seasonally as their skin’s needs change.

    Creams

Jar of Chagrin Valley Soap & Salve Company Whipped Squalane Face & Eye Mousse with a black lid on a reflective surface.

Our Whipped Squalane Face & Eye Cream is our lightest whipped butter, formulated especially for delicate facial skin.

Its airy texture offers lightweight moisture that absorbs quickly, making it a good everyday choice for all skin types, especially during warmer months or whenever skin needs moisture without extra richness.

For very dry, flaky, or winter‑stressed skin, the richer feel of our Whipped Shea Butter or Whipped Cocoa Butter can be especially comforting. These butters offer deeper nourishment and can be used sparingly, layered over a lighter cream, or reserved for moments when the skin needs extra support.

Their concentrated textures make them ideal for addressing seasonal dryness or areas that tend to feel more parched.

    Why Exfoliate Facial Skin?

Exfoliation is a simple way to help the skin feel smoother, brighter, and more refreshed.

Organic Adzuki Bean Micrograin Face Scrub

As we age, the natural shedding of dead skin cells slows, allowing them to linger on the surface and contribute to a dull or uneven appearance.

Gentle exfoliation helps lift away this buildup, giving the skin a softer feel and allowing moisturizers to absorb more effectively.

Facial skin responds best to a light touch. Small‑grain exfoliants — such as powdered grains, finely milled beans, or fine sugars — offer enough texture to refresh the surface without overwhelming it.

Most people find that gentle exfoliating once or twice a week is plenty, though some may use a very small amount more often on areas that tend to feel congested.

Daily cleansing with a soft cloth or pad already provides a bit of natural exfoliation, so there’s no need for anything harsh or abrasive. The goal is to support the skin’s natural rhythm, not to scrub it into submission.

We offer three very different facial scrubs, each with its own texture and approach:

    Adzuki Bean Micrograin Facial Scrub
Finely milled organic adzuki beans create a soft, powdery exfoliant that gently buffs away dull skin. When mixed with water, natural saponins provide a mild cleansing effect, leaving the skin smooth and refreshed without abrasion.

      Facial Clay Masks

Clay masks offer a simple way to give the skin a deeper sense of clarity.

Clays naturally bind to excess oil and surface buildup, helping the complexion feel smoother, more balanced, and refreshed.

Natural Clay Facial Mask in Wooden BowlA clay mask can be used on the full face or applied only to areas that feel oily, dull, or congested.

Those with combination skin may benefit from “multi‑masking,” using a variety of clay blends for targeted application on different zones to match each area’s needs.

Each of our clay masks has its own unique blend of clays and botanicals, offering different levels of adsorption (cleansing power), softness, and skin feel.

Because our masks are in powdered form, they stay fresh until mixed with water and offer a level of freshness and customization that pre‑mixed masks can’t match.

      Herbal Facial Steams Toners

Facial steams offer a relaxing way to give facial skin a little extra attention.

Warm steam softens the surface, encourages a light natural flush, and helps loosen the buildup that collects throughout the day — makeup, excess oil, and the fine layer of dead skin cells that can make the skin feel heavy or easily congested. It’s a gentle ritual that prepares the skin for a more effective cleanse.

Organic Hair TeaAs dried herbs meet warm water, they release their natural aromas and plant compounds into the air, creating a soft, spa‑like moment — a way to reset both the skin and the senses.

The warmth doesn’t “open pores” in a literal sense, but it does help the skin relax, making the surface more receptive to the rest of your routine.

For those who prefer not to steam — whether due to comfort, sensitivity, or simply personal preference — herbal toners offer a beautiful alternative.

A toner made from steeped botanicals gives the skin a fresh, hydrated feel without heat. It can be used after cleansing to remove any lingering residue or anytime the skin needs a light, refreshing boost.

Whether you choose a warm facial steam or a cool botanical toner, the goal is the same: to give the skin a moment of clarity and hydration, creating a clean, comfortable canvas for the rest of your routine.
