I began making soap in 2001 with ingredients that I believed in, for the people that I loved. After all these years, that goal has never changed.

How to Use

Many believe salt bars to be drying and abrasive, but they are not. A fresh bar may feel scratchy, but as it wears down it becomes smooth and polishes your skin more than it exfoliates.

How Should I Use Natural Soap to Clean My Face?

We believe in simple, effective cleansing for your complexion and that is accomplished with natural soap and water. Natural Organic Face Soap

Many believe salt bars to be drying and abrasive, but they are not. A fresh bar may feel scratchy, but as it wears down it becomes smooth and polishes your skin more than it exfoliates.

I use this salt bar directly on my face, which is very sensitive, a couple times a week. There is a wee bit of a sting from the salt and it may not lather and foam like the rest of our bars, the result is smooth, silky skin.

Hand Lathering is usually the suggested method for cleansing delicate facial skin.

  • Use lukewarm water to create a creamy lather in your clean hands.
  • Gently massage the lather over your face using circular motions with your fingers.
  • Rinse with cool water and pat dry.

Washcloth Washers: A washcloth can help remove dead cells and invigorate your skin. A gentle massage with a soft washcloth can help keep facial skin smooth and clean.

  • Rub the bar on a soft, clean, wet cloth to create a creamy lather.
  • Apply to your face by a gentle massage using circular motions.
  • Rinse with cool water and pat dry. Organic Cotton Washcloth

If you are using a washcloth:

  • Exfoliating or scrubbing too hard may cause the skin to become red and irritated.
  • Use a clean washcloth, especially if you are prone to acne. Washcloths can re-deposit dirt and grime right back onto your skin.
  • Washcloths can have soft or rough fibers. You want to use soft, NOT rough fibers on your face.

Never share washcloths or other accessories and replace or clean them often.

A Few Other Pointers:

  • Use warm, not hot, water to wash your face.
  • Use cool water as a final rinse to close your pores.
  • Avoid products made with synthetic ingredients that can irritate facial skin.
  • Avoid products that contain alcohol which can cause skin to become tight and dry.
  • Apply a moisturizer immediately after washing your face while skin is still damp.

FAQs

Aren't all handmade soaps the same? . . .

The answer is NO!

Saying a soap is "handmade" says nothing about quality of the ingredients or the knowledge and skill of the soapmaker!

BLOG:  "Are All Handmade Soaps The Same?"

The answer is, YES!

Chagrin Valley Soap & Salve is a USDA Certified Organic company. Certified Organic Skin Care

The most important consideration in any business is its customers. Today's world of misleading claims, false advertising, and simple deception, often leaves consumers trying to discover the truth about personal products and their ingredients.

  • We want our customers to know that we are committed to transparency in everything we do.
  • We want our customers to know that when we say "organic," we mean it.
  • We believe that in becoming a USDA Certified Organic company, our customers do not have to wonder if we really use certified organic ingredients or if our organic products are truly organic.
  • So we choose to be a certified organic company and abide by the strict standards required for organic certification.

Why Did We Become a Certified Organic Company?

What Do All of the Organic Labels Mean?

Organic Soap Labeling

We often receive emails from concerned customers that have read about the devastating effects that palm plantations can have on tropical forests.

Natural Organic Certified Sustainable SoapAt Chagrin Valley Soap we treasure our planet and its inhabitants. We know that although we play a very small part, we must always make choices that are ecologically and socially responsible.

As the global demand for palm oil continues to increase we want to be part of the global initiative that changes how that palm oil tree is grown.

Our Palm Oil is grown and manufactured according to standards for sustainable practices set forth by Rainforest Alliance.

Chagrin Valley’s Palm Oil

Over 30 years ago large tracts of rainforest in South America were cleared via “slash and burn” with a promise to indigenous people that they would have fresh farm and grazing lands.

The top soil in the rainforest is very thin and with the trees gone there were no roots to serve as temporary water storage and no protection from the tree canopies to prevent soil runoff. As a result, all of the soil nutrients were washed away creating areas of barren land. (Picture to the right from Wikipedia)

The palm oil that we purchase comes from plantations that have been grown on these once barren lands in a region of the Amazon that was cleared 30-40 years ago. The palm plantation has reintroduced a new forest crop which has brought back many species of birds and other plants and animals and preserves forests surrounding the plantation. While not as diverse as native Rainforest, it is a huge improvement over barren grasslands.

As the global demand for palm oil continues to increase, we believe that if both manufacturers and consumers demand Certified Sustainable palm oil, producers will grow Certified Sustainable palm oil. That is the only way to really protect our rainforests.

If there is no demand, growers will continue the cheaper unsustainable practices, because no one is paying them for a sustainable product. (If you build it, they will come!)

So instead of eliminating palm oil, at Chagrin Valley we use certified organic, certified sustainable palm oil. Our palm oil is either Rainforest Alliance certified sustainable or Friend of the Earth certified sustainable.

What Are Essential Oils?

Natural Essential Oil Skin Care

Have you ever enjoyed the scent of a fragrant flower or herb? The fragrance comes from potent, aromatic compounds called essential oils.

These natural compounds are found in the flowers, stems, seeds, bark, roots, fruits and other parts of plants.

Essential oils not only give plants their unique scents, they also help lure plant pollinators and protect plants from insects and other predators.

The chemical composition of essential oils can provide valuable psychological and physical aromatherapeutic benefits.

Pure Essential Oil Skin Care

It is important to note that to be a true essential oil, the oil must be isolated from the plant material by physical means only. Essential oils are NEVER extracted using solvents.

Although synthetic fragrances or "nature identical" oils are available at a much lower cost, only natural plant essential oils to will provide the botanical benefits.

If you are pregnant or under a doctor's care for any medical condition, please consult your healthcare provider before using essential oils.

Testimonials

I have to admit I thought no way can anyone really like this. I got the sample size, and it's THE best exfoliater soap! I love it! Makes my skin so soft too. Never would have thought! Will be ordering more of this when my sample size shrinks!! Shonta, California

The sea salt and seaweed bar is divine, especially altered with the honey butter bar - my dry, flaky, hypersensitive skin just eats it all up and ends up glowing, no need for moisturizer. Again, thank you, just wanted to let you know that I appreciate your work and your products make me a VERY happy person! Maddy, Canada

I am a new customer and I have already received two shipments so far of your BELOVED soaps!! I found out about this company on YouTube watching a tutorial on the Butter Bar Conditioner. Since my first order, I have been pleasantly pleased with the remarkable results! I just wanted to comment on the face bar Sea Salt& Seaweed it has dramatic results. I have suffered with oily/cystic acne/pores type skin. After a few washes with this soap my pores alone have shrunken DRAMATICALLY!! Mind you I have very large pores a few of them look like craters on the moon. My face looks soooooooo much better! In fact by 65% I might add. My make up goes on so much smoother, and the powder doesn't settle into my pores exaggerating them even further. I am so happy, so I am delighted to tell you I am your NEW SHOPPER IN LOVE! Karen, Tennessee

I absolutely LOVE the Sea Salt and Seaweed soap, it really makes you feel so refreshed and it keeps my face/pores clear. It smells wonderful! My other favorite is the Java Spice. Your soap is incredible, there is no way I could use any other soap. I'm going to give the tea tree/neem soap a whirl on my face a few times a week and see how it works. I've tried many of your soaps, but the sea salt & seaweed is my favorite. Lisa, Pennsylvania

Hi Ida, It’s me again, but this time I am writing a testimonial for your webpage. We have been very happy customers with very happy skin using your products for years and I am so excited every time you make something new. I wish you made everything! I emailed you last Spring about making salt soap. I had tried some at a spa and loved it. (by the way I paid $15.00 for a much smaller bar!) At that time you told me about the breast cancer and you promised that it would take time but you would do some research and work on a recipe. You kept your promise and I ordered a bar a few weeks ago and of course being the impatient person I did not wait until the ready date. It is fabulous bar. Much more moisturizing than other salt bars I have tried. My hubby especially likes it and it really lathers for him I think because he has more hair on his body. I don’t want to put pressure on you but I expected it to be great if you made it. I just want to tell you that you are an inspiration to us all. You told me it took over six months of experimenting with recipes since it was a different kind of soap and I know you did that all while undergoing treatments. I just want you to know how much we appreciate doing business with a company that still takes so much pride in their products. There is loads of love and caring in everything you make and it shows. Joy, California
